Pipesizing and pipeinstallation for a building. Our Courses. Gearboxes. Introduction Prime movers such as Electric motors, internal combustion engines, steam engines and turbines produce rotary motion at certain speeds and with certain torques at optimum efficiency.

Gearboxes

The motion produced is rarely equal to the motion required to do the necessary work and gear trains are required to translate the motion economically at maximum efficiency. It may be possible to use a low cost method of translating the motion e.g. a timing belt vee belt or chain transmission system. However these methods are limiting in their scope and are subject to regular maintenance and replacement. The engineered gearbox generally provides the optimum solution. Gearboxes can be engineered to allow gear ratio changes to enable output shaft speed while keeping the input speed and torque at the same value.

Gearboxes also allow the input shaft and the output shaft to be in different directions. Simple Drive Train Rules 1) For any pair of meshing gears the angular velocity ratio is given by w2 /w1. Gears – General Gearing Arrangements. Gears – General Gearing Arrangements Gear trains and gearing linkage exists in many aspects of aerospace mechanisms. Gearing systems are also part of any electromechanical actuator design. Gearing systems at their simplest consist of 2 gears. When 2 gears are not sufficient due to size, volume or strength constraints, a multi-gear train or a compound gear train is required. Metal Forming Templates. Forming Technologies - Manufacturing Processes. Soft - Heidenhain - JoePapa. How stepper motors work. Stepper motors consist of a permanent magnetic rotating shaft, called the rotor, and electromagnets on the stationary portion that surrounds the motor, called the stator.

How stepper motors work

Figure 1 illustrates one complete rotation of a stepper motor. At position 1, we can see that the rotor is beginning at the upper electromagnet, which is currently active (has voltage applied to it). To move the rotor clockwise (CW), the upper electromagnet is deactivated and the right electromagnet is activated, causing the rotor to move 90 degrees CW, aligning itself with the active magnet. This process is repeated in the same manner at the south and west electromagnets until we once again reach the starting position. Figure 1 In the above example, we used a motor with a resolution of 90 degrees or demonstration purposes. You may double the resolution of some motors by a process known as "half-stepping". Robotics Design Process

Here are two examples: A community wants to construct a robot zoo in which the "animals" move their heads, open their mouths and make appropriate sounds when they sense that someone is coming towards them. A local pet shop wishes to sell a range of devices which automatically feed small cage pets (such as rabbits, gerbils, mice etc.) when their owners are away for the weekend. You need to determine what problem you are trying to solve before you attempt to design and build a robot to solve a problem. Researching and Designing gathering information identifying specific details of the design which must be satisfied identifying possible and alternative design solutions planning and designing a appropriate structure which includes drawings Gathering information can involve reading, listening, conducting interviews and observing.
