Libraries, Museums and Archives :: Acumen
Earlier this week I attended a workshop for the Academic Libraries of the Future project, held at Cardiff University. The aim of the project is to examine potential future scenarios within society and how this could impact on academic libraries. My workshop was examining ‘ The Wild West’ scenario; an era of instability and regional divides, largely market driven but relatively open. We began the day by trying to visualise this scenario and what it could be like if this was the case in 2050. We thought about how this might affect currency, language, global resources, communication, and education.

… or that’s what I like to think as I embark upon another year teaching my ten week Research Methods module to our students taking the MA Information Studies degree. I always love the first sessions – the beginning of an opportunity to get on my soapbox and be a research methods nerd for the next couple of months or so! This morning we began with some discussion about What is research? and Why do we do it?

BeyeNETWORK: Gartner Identifies Four Information Management Roles IT Departments Need to Remain Effective for 2010
What an opportunity « Information Matters – Library and Information Studies at the University of Brighton
Interesting piece in the latest Computer Weekly which reports on research from Gartner about the “4 roles that will define IT departments of the future”. They are: Those last 3 look a lot like the work currently done by many library and information professionals. If Gartner is right, perhaps the future for the LIS profession is brighter than many are predicting.Welcome to the frustration decade (and the decade of change)

At ACRL, One Librarian Looks to the Very, Very, Distant Future - 3/19/2009 - Library Journal
In a session at last weekend's Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) conference billed as “not for the faint of heart,” University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada) librarian and chief information officer Michael Ridley challenged librarians to imagine the library of the future—the very, very distant future. In a talk that had Star Trek fans among the audience brimming with enthusiasm, Ridley spoke of a “post-literate” future in which man and machine meld seamlessly together. Ridley got right to the point. “What we do is toast,” he told the audience.1 New research conducted by Ipsos MORI shows how academic library and IT services are budgeting for today’s economic conditions, but are in need of help to scenario plan for the long term impact of the recession. ‘The impact of the economic recession on university library and IT services’ report, commissioned by JISC, SCONUL and UCISA , contains the findings of 40 interviews carried out in 36 universities across the UK. The research shows that library and IT services are adept at managing their budgets year on year, but acknowledges that there is a need to develop creative solutions to be able to offer the current 24 hour access to resources students, academics and researchers currently expect.

Literacy is a learned skill involving an ability to transform characters on paper into mental concepts and images. Listening to an audio book requires a slightly different skill, but requires the ability to transform audio sounds into mental concepts and images. The trend in the information world is to make the interface between information and our brains as seamless and as invisible as possible. However, if all we do is download tons of information into our brains, we haven’t accomplished much. Information needs to be relevant, useful, and somehow meaningful. In short, we need to experience it.

Future Libraries: Nerve Center of the Community Ever since the people of ancient Nineveh began storing and classifying their books nearly 3,000 years ago, libraries have been hallowed and largely unchanging bastions of learning. But in the information age, libraries have been caste with a new identity, and the future is evolving into a very different place. Ten years ago, as the Internet began to take off, many in the tech elite were predicting the death of the public library. What the critics failed to predict, however, was libraries’ stirring ability to reinvent themselves.
