Libraries, Museums and Archives :: Acumen. Both Nick Moore and Elaine Kempson began their careers in libraries and Acumen has maintained the connection. Some of the work referred to in other sections of this workforce was undertaken in the context of libraries - Nick Moore's work on performance measurement, for example. This section focuses on some of the recent consultancy assignments that we have undertaken. Cross domain work The context for much of this work has been set by the fact that, since 1999, the government has tried to bring the domains of libraries, museums and archives closer together.

To achieve this, they created Resource, now re-launched as MLA: The Museums, Libraries and Archives Council . Stewardship a project undertaken jointly with Sara Selwood and Julie Carpenter of EfC . International activity we were commissioned jointly with EfC to identify the extent of international activity undertaken by the sector. Mapping access to collections mda Review Libraries Museums We have also begun working with museums. Academic libraries of the future: where could we be in 2050? Earlier this week I attended a workshop for the Academic Libraries of the Future project, held at Cardiff University. The aim of the project is to examine potential future scenarios within society and how this could impact on academic libraries.

My workshop was examining ‘The Wild West’ scenario; an era of instability and regional divides, largely market driven but relatively open. We began the day by trying to visualise this scenario and what it could be like if this was the case in 2050. We thought about how this might affect currency, language, global resources, communication, and education. As you can see from the overview, in this scenario UK Higher Education consists of 20 academic and research intensive universities, 2-3 major vocational institutions in regional clusters (merging FE with HE), and around 25 new entrants from the private sector, mainly operating for profit.

The first activity looked at what an academic library might be like in the scenario. Un chargé de Veille à I-Expo « Chronique d'un chargé de veille. The answer is to be prepared for that special moment. Kaefer Aerospace is a worldwide leading integrator of insulation and interior solutions within the aerospace business. One of the most significant trends in business is digitalization. The big traditional players did not anticipate these trends. Kaefer Aerospace does trend analysis and then turns these trends into business. Trend radar in the company leads to the innovation development process. In the next stage we look at these factors: trend proposal, trend candidate, trend draft, trend, and focus trend. This is influencing the company by using radar methodology. BeyeNETWORK: Gartner Identifies Four Information Management Roles IT Departments Need to Remain Effective for 2010. Gartner, Inc. has identified four information-management roles that IT departments need to establish and recruit from outside the IT team in a major trend that will affect both IT and business.

“Over the next two years, business demand for IT-driven growth and innovation will outstrip the supply of qualified people to fulfill job roles and as result traditional IT tasks are moving outside the IT department,” said Debra Logan, vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner. “The future of IT lies outside the IT department. Increasingly CIOs are coming from “the business” and “users” are taking control of their own information delivery infrastructure.” By the end of 2010, Gartner predicts that 40 percent of people who report into IT in a matrixed fashion or directly will have substantial business and non-IT experience.

Organizations need staff with different skills from the ones they were originally hired for. What an opportunity « Information Matters – Library and Information Studies at the University of Brighton. They are: 1. Litigation support manager 2. Enterprise information architect 3. Digital archivist 4. Those last 3 look a lot like the work currently done by many library and information professionals. Karen Schneider says “If you can make time for reading just one professional report over the holidays, please make it [this one].” With that kind of endorsement from a trusted source like her, I’m sold. I briefly scanned the report and found it most interesting, looking at how many of our assumptions about student information needs and workflow are outdated. I also think that while this is geared at academic library situations, I think that the report applies equally to public & school libraries who serve students of any age (all of us). I also enjoyed Schneider’s analysis. So the question is, why don’t we adapt our practices so that we are working with the “proxies” for library services — the faculty themselves, who create the assignments, interact first and most with students, and are the referrals for the tools we offer?

. * Directeur Prospective et Nouveaux Concepts – Danone. At ACRL, One Librarian Looks to the Very, Very, Distant Future - 3/19/2009 - Library Journal. Library and IT services need to plan for the future. New research conducted by Ipsos MORI shows how academic library and IT services are budgeting for today’s economic conditions, but are in need of help to scenario plan for the long term impact of the recession. ‘The impact of the economic recession on university library and IT services’ report, commissioned by Jisc, SCONUL and UCISA, contains the findings of 40 interviews carried out in 36 universities across the UK.

The research shows that library and IT services are adept at managing their budgets year on year, but acknowledges that there is a need to develop creative solutions to be able to offer the current 24 hour access to resources students, academics and researchers currently expect. It also warns that the impact of any cuts is likely to have wide implications on institutions’ delivery of their overall strategic aims, such as enhancing the student experience. “Identifying and addressing the current impacts of the recession is only part of the process. Creating the Ultimate Information Experience. Creating the Ultimate Information Experience Planning Our Next Generation Libraries Literacy is a learned skill involving an ability to transform characters on paper into mental concepts and images. Listening to an audio book requires a slightly different skill, but requires the ability to transform audio sounds into mental concepts and images.

The trend in the information world is to make the interface between information and our brains as seamless and as invisible as possible. However, if all we do is download tons of information into our brains, we haven’t accomplished much. Information needs to be relevant, useful, and somehow meaningful. In short, we need to experience it. So how do we take dry, boring information and turn it into a meaningful experience? In the team-based business cultures of our working lives, where good service is a minimum and professionalism is a given, businesses are grappling with the experience concept as a way to distinguish themselves?

By Thomas Frey. Future Libraries: Nerve Center of the Community. Future Libraries: Nerve Center of the Community Ever since the people of ancient Nineveh began storing and classifying their books nearly 3,000 years ago, libraries have been hallowed and largely unchanging bastions of learning. But in the information age, libraries have been caste with a new identity, and the future is evolving into a very different place. Ten years ago, as the Internet began to take off, many in the tech elite were predicting the death of the public library. What the critics failed to predict, however, was libraries’ stirring ability to reinvent themselves. Much like plants that flourish with good soil, water and sunshine, libraries have actually begun to thrive in our information-rich environment. Such is their resurgence that today, libraries are going through an age of rebirth.
