His Delicatessen With Love photo series portray grandmothers from 58 different countries, each posing right before they start cooking and then presenting their signature dish in the end. Yet even in industries that don’t explicitly reward sheer quantity of hours spent on the job, the pressure to arrive early, stay late, and be available, always, for in-person meetings at 11 a.m. on Saturdays can be intense. Which obstacles did you overcome on your journey, in order to find your true calling? I have been very blessed all my life to be part of a family where we belief anything is possible. What advice would you give to someone who pursues a similar profession as yourself? In life we actually only have two choices – to see any circumstance as a challenge or as an opportunity. Where do you draw motivation from and what inspires you?

Help Women Take the Stage - Herminia Ibarra

Her TED talk and Barnard commencement speech went viral. Lean in, she says to women, take your place at the table, seize the stage. I never suspected she had a personal message for me, but sitting in on a recent panel on “Women as the Way Forward” that included Sandberg, I learned otherwise. When the panel moderator, NYT’s Nicholas Kristof, opened for questions from the audience, my husband whispered to me, “Go, ask a question.” Why didn’t I speak up? Defensively, I told myself, I’m tired, the happy victim of too many Davos panels and parties. But my silence nagged me. When I attend a conference, I realized, my mindset is, “What will I learn?” After the panel I bumped into an old friend who leads a well-known organization.
