What language are you speaking? (Information literacy-more than a set of skills) – There's a Parti in the library. . It would be fair to say that when you mention Information Literacy (IL), people may believe we are all speaking the same language but in my experience, it is like we are often speaking in different dialects. Curious as to how my colleagues at my school defined information literacy, I surveyed a number of them and received the following results. 1.’skills for using computers and finding information’ 2. ‘the core job of the teacher librarian in their teaching role’ 3. ‘helping students to understand their world’ 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

These responses highlight the problem existing across education regarding a definitive explanation for IL (Langford 1998). What is Information Literacy? What is Information literacy? Information Literacy is discussed as a unifying literacy by Eisenberg (2010) which encapsulates multiple literacies evolving from the traditional forms. Our PYP evaluation went really well and it was gratifying to hear the evaluators’ positive observations of our school. They talked about our dynamic learning spaces, the energy of our teachers and learners and the respect that is evident between staff and students. They were impressed by how articulate our students are and the openness of our teachers. It was clear to them that the entire school community has a deep understanding of the PYP philosophy and that we have a strong culture of learning. Almost all their recommendations are things on which we are either working already or have identified for action through the self study. There’s only one thing I found jarring in their feedback and it relates to my beliefs about inquiry learning. They noted that neither students nor teachers seem able to identify what particular inquiry cycles we follow.

They are some of the magic sauce of ds106 that knits participants together. Giving and getting feedback is what makes this different from just a self paced online experience. It’s not that difficult to do, but in the rush of all the activity, creativity, connectivity, it sometimes gets lost in the rush. Constructive comments are utterly valuable because they are like the gift of conversation.

What is a constructive comment? It should be more than “Nice work” or “I agree”. One approach if giving criticism is to put it inside a sandwich- open with aspects you praise or agree with, offer critical statements, and close with a positive. When you comment, show that you are listening. For some more advice, see: And when you get comments on your site, by all means reply if it merits a response. About me | Docendo Discimus. नमस्ते Namaste! I am a middle and high-school Social Studies and Modern Foreign Languages teacher with 21 years’ experience, 17 of which have been at international schools. A native of the West of Ireland, I lived for 18 years in Japan and in 2014 moved with my family to Northern India. Relocating to a new country is exciting for all of us but does not come without its fair share of challenges. This experience, gained in tandem with my COETAIL learning, has given me deeper insights into the pivotal role we international educators play in preparing our children for today’s – and tomorrow’s – world. Over the past 12 months in particular I have grown, both personally and professionally, through interacting and sharing in professional learning networks.

Now, more than ever, I value and appreciate the integration within the school community of connectivism, collaboration, risk-taking and a commitment to serving others. Nicola Takizawa – November 2016. <<Follow me on Twitter>> Recent work.
