The Rhetorical Journey: How Pixar predicts mastery in a potential employee

Randy Nelson, Dean of Pixar University, outlines four criteria that they look for when hiring new people into the team at Pixar. Depth (in any area) - Randy believes that the best predictor of ability to master any one area is if somebody has already mastered another area. It is more likely that someone who has achieved mastery in golf will achieve mastery as a Pixar artist or programmer than any set of pre-existing talent as an artist or programmer.

Gödel, Escher, Bach - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid (commonly GEB ) is a 1979 book by Douglas Hofstadter , described by his publishing company as "a metaphorical fugue on minds and machines in the spirit of Lewis Carroll ". [ 1 ] On its surface, GEB examines logician Kurt Gödel , artist M. C.

We titled this course Gödel, Escher, Bach : A Mental Space Odyssey for a variety of reasons. The first part is not necessarily obvious. Although the three names allude to the very famous mathematician Kurt Gödel, the even more prominent artist Maurits Cornelis Escher, and finally the musical genius Johann Sebastian Bach, this course will not be about these three remarkable individuals. http://ocw.mit.edu/high-school/courses/godel-escher-bach/syllabus/

The Monk & The Monkey - Short movie : Finished Work : Animation

http://forum.cgarena.com/viewtopic.php?t=10642 "A young kid, Ragu' is sent by his master to a final quest in order to become a monk. The seemingly simple task turns out to be a challenge as Ragu' discovers the real value of his quest."
It took Michelangelo a day to paint the Creation scene on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. It took Nice Shoes almost a month to paint Kanye West into a :90 Italian fresco-style video to build buzz around the release of the artist's new single "Power". When Stink London was in need of an additional creative collaborator for the post and VFX, they approached Nice Shoes for the task. The studio then embarked on the challenging process of expanding Kanye's world using their myriad technical and artistic skills. The video collage, which premiered Thursday, August 5th on MTV, engaged all of the New York-based studio's creative services. Nice Shoes' VFX, color grading and design teams spent a month compositing 400+ layers in Flame to depict Kanye as a doomed emperor presiding over a sensual, yet apocalyptic spectacle.

http://www.carlosbaena.com/2010/08/rowan-atkinson-invisible-drum-kit/ I found online what I still consider one of the most inspirational things I’ve watched and owned as an animator. I found a VHS version of this back in college, and on and off I’ve watched and studied this clip so many times. Every time I’ve watched it, I’ve found something new and that says something. From an animation point of view, this clip has about everything I love about what it is that we do. Totally recommended. Things to watch for:

http://www.thecoolist.com/the-surf-by-stuart-gibson/ Photographer Stuart Gibson has found a lovely muse in the rough waters off the coast of Tasmania, Australia. The force of the surf on sand has created some incredible images, with daring sport surfers as a focal point. These photos are filled with the power of nature– the monstrous curve of the waves, the rocky coast in the background and the graceful surfer within. Together, they make for an apt metaphor of the survival of man against nature, so subtly symbolized within each frame. [ stuart gibson via thegrafikmuseum and mosaic ]

Opera by David Leventi

While our obsession with amazing modern theaters is well documented, we certainly appreciate the sense of architectural history shown in the photography of David Leventi. Leventi has traveled the world over, photographing classic music hall architecture for his series aptly titled “Opera”. The detail, the symmetry, the vanishing point at center stage make these images truly breathtaking. It is touching to see old architecture so carefully preserved here, as the alternative of abandoned places is one to truly regret. Nice work, David! [ david leventi via fubiz ]
