Google. Photo Effect. Drawing Lessons. In 1988, an extraordinary thing happened in the world of animation. The film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit? "( Directed by Robert Zemekis, animation directed by Richard Williams) was released. The film gleefully celebrated the kind of imaginative slapstick cartoon violence that was the staple of the most popular short cartoon classics that were made during the period from around 1940 till the decline in the year that the film takes place,1947. Cartoon lover's eyes popped like Tex Avery wolves all over the world for this caliber of animation hadn't been seen since...well, 1947. The film was a major hit, and a powerful shot in the arm for the until then sluggish animation business. For me personally, well...it saved my life, and my faith in the power of the animated film. It was also in 1988 that I became associated with the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon Art in Dover, New Jersey. What follows are the notes for my class. So, are we ready to start drawing?
Click on page 1 below! Camera Raw - Emboss Text Effect. One of my dear friends, Bert Monroy, has a wonderful podcast on Revision3 called Pixel Perfect. Some of you may remember that I've appeared as a guest on Bert's show in the past, where I've spoken about using Illustrator and symbols, 3D, animation, and the awesome Live Paint feature. Recently, Bert did an episode on how to create a license plate in Photoshop. As always, the techniques that Bert teaches on his show are great.
But I couldn't help myself in thinking that creating a license plate in Illustrator would not only be possible, it would end up looking better, and it would be scalable to boot. The challenge though is quite apparent -- license plates feature text that is embossed into the metal -- and Illustrator, with all of the wonderful effects it offers, doesn't have an emboss effect. In reality, Illustrator DOES have an emboss "effect" via the 3D effect. So I spent a few minutes with Illustrator with this challenge, and came up with the following: Not bad, eh?

Maybe it’s because bracelet stacking is all the craze now and I can’t get enough! Some of the bracelets I have worked on before can be found here, here, and here. I have made a few variations to some of these as well but I recently made something a little different than usual and it was something I wanted to try for quite awhile.
About a year and a half ago I took an amazing trip to Hong Kong and while I was there I purchased this bracelet and have always wanted to try to replicate it. I get complimented on it all the time but it wasn’t until last week when a friend of mine noticed it and said she wanted one just like it so I took that as a challenge to finally make it.
Here is what the bracelet looks like: It is made of of small rings…simple enough right? The first thing I did was measure the length of the bracelet by using the one I have as a guide.
