Tumblr to Get Portuguese Version. The microblogging platform Tumblr will soon be translated into Portuguese, its latest Brazilian hire Gina Gotthilf confirmed in an interview with the Brazilian blog Link Estadão, following her participation in the gigantic Campus Party Brazil.

It’s been known for a couple weeks that the company was particularly interested in Brazil, and it became clear it was planning to launch operations in the country when it started looking for a ‘Country Consultant – Brazil’. Not only did Tumblr publish an online offer, but its evangelist Mark Coatney and HR manager Charlie Gray both traveled to the country last week in the hope of finding the right person for the job. And it seems they did: as it is now known, the company hired the 25-year-old social media executive Gina Gotthilf to prepare the opening of its local offices. Everyone's favorite (re)blogging platform, Tumblr, is getting ready for a little Southern expansion. The company, which has its headquarters in New York City, is setting up a secondary shop in Richmond, Virginia. "Why Richmond? " you might ask. As fate would have it, the company's mobile app developers and community support team are already located in the area, so adding a Richmond office wasn't such a stretch.

And we're sure the startup's recently announced $30 million round of funding didn't hurt in making that decision, either. Tumblr's chosen the amusingly named Corrugated Box Building as its Virginia home. New York staffers, including company President John Maloney, will in in Richmond to help christen the new facilities with a Tumblr meetup and press event on Thursday, January 13. In January, Tumblr had more than 7 million individual blogs. At the time of this writing, the total blog ticker on its site read about three times that at 20,873,182 — beating out WordPress.com's current count by about 85,000 blogs. WordPress.com's count doesn't include sites that people host themselves with the open source software via WordPress.org, but given that the hosted service had about a four-year headstart, surpassing it in number is still an impressive feat for Tumblr.

Clearly a flood of individuals have been signing up for Tumblr lately. But top companies in entertainment and news and fashion have also recently launched Tumblr blogs. Tumblr now reaches 120M people each month. Karp, citing the startup’s latest Quantcast figures, shared that the social network and blogging hybrid now sees 15 billion page views each month. Interviewed by entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky, Karp talked about the company’s early growth, its decision to take the road less traveled in social networking, the unexpected advantages of building for creators, and Tumblr’s New York-centric culture. “The early growth that we saw was around creators … our first community was those creators,” Karp said of Tumblr’s initial growth spurt. “We didn’t set out to build network .. all we wanted to do was make novel tools.” Tumblr is Blowing Up - So When Will It's Business?

"Forgot to make a big deal of this earlier, but Tumblr crossed the 20-billion-post mark Monday night," said a tweet from the official Tumblr account, with a link to Tumblr's About page, which sports a counter showing the total number of Tumblr posts. Currently, the number sits at more than 20 billion posts, 51 million of which were created today. Tumblr currently has more than 49.7 million total blogs and is due to hit the 50 million milestone any day now. The rapid rise of Tumblr in the past year has been nothing short of amazing.
