Math Monday: Make a Ball of Cards

Here is a new one, by Zach Abel. Thirty cards are required, and each is slotted as in the template below. To build your own, simply copy this pattern onto thirty cards, cut on the red lines, and assemble as in the image. Note that Zach’s version above has some cards facing in and some facing out, however, the template must always face the same way. Notice how sets of five cards meet at their short edges form six different prism-like “equators.”

Advanced Guns - Super Maul

It is made by assembling several Mauly clips and a thick rubber band and has tremendous firepower. With a regular pencil as projectile it can penetrate thick cardboard and empty soda cans. Never point this gun at anyone! This gun is not practical for random battles, but more of a gun for the determined assassin. This gun IS dangerous! Facts Assembly Make sure the row of Mauly 32's don't have any gaps between them and that they are aligned properly. Firing Put the pencil through the row of Mauly 32's with the bottom end first. Aim the gun at your intended target and release the pencil. Mount a laser pen on top or bottom for improved accuracy. The Super Maul can inflict huge amounts of damage when fired from short range, but because the projectile has a tendency to rotate after a while the long range capability of this gun is rather limited. We have tried to use a trailing piece of string for stabilizing the gun.

This is a project I've been working on for about 6 months now next to my regular studies. It is a levitating light bulb. This project came to life when i saw Jeff Lieberman's implementation of it a few months before starting. I was fascinated and started research on building my own, reading many academic papers and spending long nights reading up on pretty much every project which included wireless power transfer or magnetic leviation.

What I found is that there are many many existing projects of both, but only a few have combined both these technologies. Once you have both working it's really just a matter of overlaying them.
