Le nouveau né reste accroché sur le ventre de sa mère, Sorja, qui devrait le garder sur elle pendant environ deux mois. «Nous pourrons savoir si c'est un mâle ou une femelle que lorsqu'il se décrochera», a indiqué Sandrine Apéry, vétérinaire du zoo. Le nom choisi via un concours sur Internet Avec cette troisième naissance, Sorja est considérée comme la meilleure reproductrice pour la population captive du grand hapalémur (hapalemur simus).

The International Union for Conservation of Nature Species Survival Commission held a conference in Madagascar this week to discuss the fate of the world’s 103 lemur species and came to the shocking conclusion that they are the most endangered mammals on earth. “Madagascar has, by far, the highest proportion of threatened species of any primate habitat region or any one country in the world.
As a result, we now believe that lemurs are probably the most endangered of any group of vertebrates,” said primatologist Christoph Schwitzer, head of research at Bristol Zoo Gardens in the United Kingdom and the IUCN advisor on Madagascar’s primates. More than 90 percent of the world’s lemur species have been upgraded to critically endangered, endangered or vulnerable on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species list, which scientists are attributing to changes in the landscape since the last assessment was done in 2005.

That’s what a new assessment by the International Union for Conservation of Nature has found. Of the 103 different species of lemur, 23 are now listed as critically endangered, 52 are endangered, 19 are vulnerable. Just 6 species are not considered to be on the endangered scale, with 2 being near-threatened and 3 being of least concern.

The most endangered of the critically endangered lemur species, the northern sportive lemur has just 18 known individuals alive. The last time such an assessment was done, in 2005, 10 species were considered critically endangered and 21 were endangered.
