Damn Fed!!

Money and Politics By far the most secret and least accountable operation of the federal government is not, as one might expect, the CIA, DIA, or some other super-secret intelligence agency. The CIA and other intelligence operations are under control of the Congress. They are accountable: a Congressional committee supervises these operations, controls their budgets, and is informed of their covert activities. It is true that the committee hearings and activities are closed to the public; but at least the people's representatives in Congress insure some accountability for these secret agencies. It is little known, however, that there is a federal agency that tops the others in secrecy by a country mile.

Stock Mkt Economy

"A growing economy consists of prices falling, not rising." The stock market does not work the way most people think. A commonly held belief — on Main Street as well as on Wall Street — is that a stock-market boom is the reflection of a progressing economy: as the economy improves, companies make more money, and their stock value rises in accordance with the increase in their intrinsic value. A major assumption underlying this belief is that consumer confidence and consequent consumer spending are drivers of economic growth. http://mises.org/daily/4654

Economics Reference

Description: The book is usually considered to be the beginning of modern economics . It begins with a discussion of the Industrial Revolution . Later it critiques the mercantilism and a synthesis of the emerging economic thinking of his time. It is mostly known due to the idea of The Invisible Hand which is an often quoted phrase from the book. Its meaning is that people will unintentionally improve their community through pursuit of their own wants and needs. The Butcher, the Baker, and the Brewer provide goods and services to each other out of self-interest; the unplanned result of this division of labor is a better standard of living for all three. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_important_publications_in_economics

Gold & Inflation

In recent times, with gold reaching all-time highs, we have seen people question the valuation of assets in dollars. Basically, the yardstick used to measure your assets — your house, car, or stock portfolio — is a steadily shrinking one. This makes you wonder whether your savings are really growing in value. In other words, if the value of your savings has doubled, but the price of milk and everything else has roughly doubled, you are not getting ahead.

I decided to publish nearly all of my response to Steve’s arguments in this diary, since Ron seemed to find it quite helpful. As I told Ron, I could simply respond with a list of counter-claims, but I thought Steve would want to debate all the underlying assumptions, so I provided him with the following lengthy, detailed response. The first time I published this (in the afternoon, about five days ago) several readers said it would help them to respond to their wealthy Republican friends/acquaintances. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/10/22/912528/-My-response-to-my-affluent-Republican-brother-
