Impact of social media on the travel industry [INFOGRAPHIC] How Tech and Social Media Are Changing Travel [INFOGRAPHIC] It's spring break and summer is just around the corner, which means vacation season is upon us. From mobile apps to deal sites, people use technology more than ever to help find places to go.

Technology also helps vacationers enjoy themselves after they reach their destinations. But just how much is technology changing the way we travel? Nearly one-third of social media users have used a mobile app to find good prices for flights and hotels, and 15% have downloaded an app specific to a certain trip, according to a survey by the market research company Lab42. And just because people are on break, they aren't necessarily taking a break from their devices.

For the full picture of how technology and social media are changing our travel experiences, check out the Lab42 infographic below. What role do tech and social media play in your trips? How Reality Television Shapes Travel. Last fall, the New Jersey Defamation League that’s driving much of recent cable television sent several of its members on a mission overseas. When The Real Housewives of New Jersey began a two-episode trip to sunny Punta Cana, its Soprano-manqué cast hit the Dominican Republic running.

First, airport personnel came scurrying to remove housewife Jacqueline Laurita, teetering on high heels after an in-flight happy hour, from a baggage carousel she had mounted to search for a loudly lamented “one missing luggage.” Then, for the short trip to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana, the crew took a narco-cartel fleet of huge black SUV’s—their convoy abruptly halted when Joe “Juicy” Giudice interrupted a driver, saying, “Hey, amigo.... I gotta take a pee-pee.” Just after the Dominican Republic–set Housewives episodes aired, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Punta Cana recorded a 300 percent spike in Web traffic. But in this case, South Africa spoke for itself. The (Not So) Innocents Abroad. The Traveller’s Guide to Happiness – Infographic | The travelsupermarket.com blog. 36 Hours - Vienna. Photo Essay: Sightseeing in London, England. Photos from a day of sightseeing in London, England There’s good reason why London always makes the list as one of the world’s most visited cities.

The historical city blends modern development with its medieval past, offering snap-happy tourists endless sightseeing opportunities. Our last trip to London was during the cold month of January, having just spent several weeks bouncing around Europe’s festive Christmas Markets. Fortunately for us, we captured these photos just a few hours before a massive snowstorm hit the United Kingdom, paralyzing its transportation network and forcing its residents to reconsider their holidays (we spent 20+ hours at Heathrow Airport waiting for the runways to clear!).

Social media becoming most important marketing channel for travel, PPC in fourth place. Social media’s place as a marketing channel for the travel industry as well as its use for researching and buying a holiday is causing much scratching of heads. Today, as World Travel Market opens, a survey by the exhibition organisers finds 40% of UK travellers are using social media to help research a holiday. Last week a survey by Conrad Advertising found social media – including Facebook and Twitter - had little influence on 40% of consumers.

But, for the industry the medium is now viewed as the most important marketing channel ahead of consumer reviews, mobile and pay-per-click advertising. Furthermore, in five years time 48% of the industry believes social media will be more important than PPC while 37% say it will remain behind PPC and 15% believe it is already at a tipping point and its popularity will diminish. Of the industry figures surveyed by WTM 22% already use social media as a revenue stream and 27% are planning to going forward. A Brief Overview of Klout, and Why you Need itBowser Multimedia Productions Blog.

Clout n. pull; strong influence; muscle, especially political power: a wealthy campaign contributor with clout at city hall. Do you have clout? Even if you think you don’t have clout, Klout says everyone has Klout, and it’s true! You know what clout is, but you may not know what Klout is. If you use Twitter, you’re likely to have seen Klout scores since most Twitter applications display a person’s Klout score. But what is it and why should you care? With Oktoberfest done and dusted for another year there are plenty of stories out there about how amazing it is. It really was awesome and we are already planning to make sure we head back next year. If you want to put it on your Bucket List then make sure you take these lessons that we learned along for the ride: When to Go Well surprisingly not October actually, unless it is the very first weekend of October which is generally the last few days of the festival. We went for the last 4 days of Oktoberfest, Thursday - Sunday.

And while we had grand plans to go for at least 3 of the days we only managed to find an unreserved table on the Thursday and got booted off a reserved table on the Friday at 4pm. This meant that we could no longer be served beer so had to just enjoy the rest of the festival outdoors. Next year if we are lucky enough to go again then we plan to head over on a Sunday and enjoy the festival over a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Accommodation Book early. Cost Eating Drinking. Thailand's elephant tourism industry | The Adventures of D. Yesterday morning, when I turned on my computer after a night of restlessness, my heart sank. There, on the screen, were two Facebook status updates. One from the Elephant Nature Park & Foundation page stating Mae Sai Roong, an elephant our volunteer group had taken care of when she fell ill on Sept. 10, had taken a turn for the worst.

Then, an update time stamped about five hours later from one of the staff with the words that made my cry aloud — “Dear Sai Roong, RIP.” No. Nonononono. Mae Sai Roong had only been at the park for a little more than four months. I had wanted to wait to talk about Sai Roong and Elephant Nature Park. But, for now, to honor her life, I wanted to post a few photos of her. These photos were taken the day she was so ill, she had no strength to do anything but lay down, and the following day, when she stood up.

Two volunteers sit with Mae Sai Roong the day she lays down, Sept. 10, 2011. We didn’t think she would last the night. But, then Sai Roong passed away. By – October 3, 2011 Top Travel Tips I don’t think travel is necessarily an elitist activity. I think certain trips and forms of travel can be, but that can be said of anything. Great travel experiences can equally happen close to home or on the other side of the world. Regardless of where or how we travel, here are three ways that travel makes us better people. While I’d like to say this is a universal benefit of travel, I’m sorry to say that I’ve met plenty of idiots on the road.

Still, on the whole, travel does make us smarter. I live in Washington, DC and am therefore a natural born cynic prone to cranky outbursts. I don’t think it’s possible to argue “logic” with an airport gate agent, lose one’s luggage or look at a menu that could literally say anything and you wouldn’t know, without gaining a fair amount of patience.
