IGEM2013. Team:Groningen/Safety. From 2012.igem.org With the emergence of the field of Synthetic Biology, certain ethical questions must be considered. The debate on the safety and ethics of synthetic biology is still ongoing, and it is therefore no surprise that every iGEM team is obliged to consider these issues. The iGEM organization asks questions about the safety aspect of a team's project, pertaining to the safety in the lab, the environment, and the public. We tried to answer these questions to the best of our ability. Most of our team members have lab experience and are aware of the safety regulations pertaining to working in a lab with GMOs, but we decided to explore the safety issue more in depth.

In order to do so, we invited two authorities to give lectures and to assist in considering the need of safety during our iGEM project: Dr. J.S. We divided our safety page into four different sections. On the environmental safety page we elaborate on the risk and hazards of the our genetic modification. Team:Caltech/Biosafety - 2008.igem.org. Biosafety Concerns General Concerns There are risks in probiotic engineering that must be addressed before our system can be implemented in humans. One common risk is increasing the chance of bacterial sepsis for those who are immune deficient. Other risk factors include the impact on premature infants, CVC (central venous catheter), cardiac vascular disease, and diarrhea1. It is also unclear how probiotics affect host metabolic activities.

The engineered probiotic will persist in the gut longer if antibiotics are used to suppress other gut flora3. Subproject Concerns Oxidative Burst Short Term: There are no safety concerns beyond that of typical E. coli lab strains. Phage Pathogen Defense Phage therapy is generally not harmful to the host due to phage specificity to bacterial hosts. Lactose Intolerance Synthetic LacY/Z Plasmid: There are no known safety concerns regarding this plasmid. Vitamin Production Population Variation References Boyle RJ, Robins-Browne RM, Tang ML. In this way, they helped us to progress towards our goals and to achieve an enrichment in knowledge and skills.

In particular, we want to thank the people and teams listed below. Anna Illum Høgh, who drawed the logo that we successively digitalized. Inbal Lieblich, for helping us with the realization of the stop motion part of our video. Michael Hansen, who helped us to take images using the confocal microscope. Aske Mottelson, B.Sc. in Computer Science at University of Copenhagen, for writing the script for the image slider at the home page of our wiki. Michel Christian Nèmery, senior consultant at Radiology Department X at Herlev Hospital, for his medical feedback on our project and for his statement to the Danish magazine "Ingeniøren".

Maria Constantin, M.Sc. student in Biology-Biotechnology at University of Copenhagen, who wrote the safety page on the wiki. Team:Copenhagen/Safety. Safety Synthetic Biology and Safety By combining biology and engineering, Synthetic Biology is seen as the design and construction of new biological functions and systems not found in nature. The aim of this biological construction holds high promise in the discovery of cures for various diseases, methods for biofuel production, plants of the future, functional foods and molecular bioelectronics. The development of better medicine and sustainable energy are some of the main focuses. Rapid advances within this new emerging field have the potential of greatly benefitting mankind, though posits tremendous dangers in the wrong hands or if mistakes are made. It is therefore imperative that we as future researchers are completely aware of the consequences we might have on society and the environment. Biosafety and Biosecurity The Danish laws for working with GMO’s are set forth by the Danish Labour Inspectorate, Arbejdstilsynet, and apply to both commercial and academical institutes.

Millennials, Civic Engagement and Civic Tech. This post is written by Tamir Novotny, Senior Policy Associate at Living Cities, and is cross-posted from livingcities.org/blog. We’re (Living Cities) working with the City of Louisville, Ken. to develop technology to engage low-income young adults in the city’s long-term planning. Here’s what we’re learning. We recently kicked off in earnest a project in Louisville to develop a piece of technology aimed at engaging low-income Millennials (young adults ages 18-30) in city planning processes. This project comes as part of a broader Living Cities effort to better understand the potential for tech to deepen civic engagement and improve the lives of low-income people, and to help us explore roles we might play in maximizing this potential in the future. We came into this process with a few questions in our minds: Who exactly are Millennials and what does it take to engage them in civic process?

Here are some things we are learning. Questions? Budget Calculator. YOU CANalytics - Explore the Power of Predictive Analytics. YOU CANalytics - Explore the Power of Predictive Analytics. Six categories of Data Scientists. We are now at 9 categories after a few updates. Just like there are a few categories of statisticians (biostatisticians, statisticians, econometricians, operations research specialists, actuaries) or business analysts (marketing-oriented, product-oriented, finance-oriented, etc.) we have different categories of data scientists. First, many data scientists have a job title different from data scientist, mine for instance is co-founder. Check the "related articles" section below to discover 400 potential job titles for data scientists. Categories of data scientists Those strong in statistics: they sometimes develop new statistical theories for big data, that even traditional statisticians are not aware of.

Most of them are familiar or expert in big data. There are other ways to categorize data scientists, see for instance our article on Taxonomy of data scientists. Implications for other IT professionals Are data scientists a threat to your job/career? Related articles. Taxonomy of Data Scientists. This is a first attempt at classifying data scientists. I invite you to produce a more comprehensive, better solution. The 10 pioneering data scientists listed here were identified as top data scientists in our previous article entitled data science equation, based on their LinkedIn profile. Here we computed, for each pioneer, the number of endorsements for each of the top 4 data science related skills: analytics, big data, data mining and machine learning; these skills were identified in our previous article as most strongly linked to data science.

Then we normalized the counts, so it is expressed here as a ratio between 0 and 1, and for each individual, the total aggregated over these four skills is 100%. Now it makes our classification problem easier. Note that the correlation between machine learning and analytics is very negative (-0.82). Likewise, the correlation between big data and data mining is very negative (-0.80). Notes: (1) Kirk Borne skill sets is highly fragmented.

The Data Science Equation. I present here the results of a data science study about data science. Based on LinkedIn data (top people listed when you do a people search for data science, from a LinkedIn account with 8,000+ data science connections), we identified the fields most frequently associated with data science, as well as top data scientists on LinkedIn. The statistical validity of data science related fields is strong, while validity is weak for top data scientists. The reason being that you need to have at least 10 endorsements for your LinkedIn data science in the skills section, to be listed as a top data scientist in the following list. Pioneering data scientists such as Davenport, are not listed because they don't bother adding data science skills in their LinkedIn profile, for the same reason that you are not listed in top big data people lists based on Twitter hash tags, if you don't use Twitter hash tags in your tweets, or if you do not tweet.

In short, you could write the Data science formula. Open Technology Institute | NewAmerica.org. Hubway Data Visualization Challenge. Most Influential Tableau-Related Blog Posts. For Tableau Blogging Month, I wanted to focus on the back-catalogue of amazing blog posts written, perhaps, before you'd heard of Tableau. You should go get a cup of tea, sit down, and read all of these posts. If these posts are new to you, these are seminal posts that will inspire your Tableau journey. And maybe they will inspire you to start up your own blog? How long have there been Tableau blogs? At Tableau HQ, we’re not sure when the first ever Tableau-related blog post was.

Since then, which posts have been the most influential? I gathered this list by asking Tableau Zen Masters, and a bunch of Tableau employees for contributions. This list is ordered by publish date, oldest to newest. The Ring of Fire… by Robert Morton, June 2009 Tableau’s Community Manager, Dustin Smith, says, “It was the first time it dawned on me that data was literally lying all around us and that all I had to do was point Tableau at it and the story within would come tumbling out.” “Charts inside a tooltip?

Blog Posts in November 2013. Rank of Rank. {This is the fourth blog post in the #TableauStatsMonth series, and is a guest post by Tableau Zen Master Jonathan Drummey. Jonathan gives us a basic introduction to Rank, and then dives into a special use case of sorting a list based on average rank across a number of categories.} I’ve got several favorite new features in Tableau version 8.1: performance improvements, full-screen presentation mode, R integration, and the new built-in rank functions. This post will cover the new rank functions, some ways they can be used and differ from existing functions, and finish up with how they’ve let me replace a whole bunch of SQL, a temporary table, and several different worksheets with a single one-line calculation, and maybe help save some feet, too.

We've found that certain search terms are good indicators of flu activity. Google Flu Trends uses aggregated Google search data to estimate current flu activity around the world in near real-time.

Each week, millions of users around the world search for health information online. As you might expect, there are more flu-related searches during flu season, more allergy-related searches during allergy season, and more sunburn-related searches during the summer. You can explore all of these phenomena using Google Insights for Search. But can search query trends provide the basis for an accurate, reliable model of real-world phenomena? We have found a close relationship between how many people search for flu-related topics and how many people actually have flu symptoms. United States: Influenza-like illness (ILI) data provided publicly by the U.S.

These graphs show historical query-based flu estimates for different countries and regions compared against official influenza surveillance data. The Human Face of Big Data. Introduction I think that writing a useful blog shouldn’t be too hard with the technologies we have.

But it is. Not that writing about interesting topics is the primary challenge, but allowing others to find and use the information that you have written about is really hard to do. Sure, there are search boxes provided on blogs that allow you to find a key term. Some people use blogs that have menus and additional pages (see Figure 1 for example) that make the blog look and feel somewhat like a website. Figure 1 – My blog from today. I have come to realize that by their very nature, blogs are just one big list of serial topics over time. I have simply gotten tired of writing HTML links and tables, seeing mis-formatted tables and incorrect color renderings on different devices, and seeing garbled pages on this blog. The solution to the problem! The solution is called Tableau. Figure 2 – The Tableau-powered dashboard showing the content of 3danim8′s blog (click to go to live dashboard!).
