Creative Residency. A new industrial revolution is upon us. This self-fulfilling prophecy, first announced by Wired and subsequently picked up by The Economist, helped to make an even more striking comparison with another reality, the one told by the macro-economic indicators that marked the steady decline of industrial production which was expressed by the gross domestic product. Since then, the relentless media coverage has altered our perceptions of space and time: overnight —and without warning— we found ourselves in the future. The spread of 3D printers installed in the dusty garages of makers around the world sold for only a couple hundred euro helped to fuel the the more sensationalist features of the media’s morbid attachment to the new manufacturing technologies. Meanwhile, fascination passed from a state of techno–utopian infatuation to that of collective hallucination. But what does the future hold? ** Source: Maker Media. Wanted: Two Senior Service Designers at @FutureGov. How should citizens access public services online now and in the future? Starting immediately and initially on a contract until Christmas, we’re looking for one full time and one part time senior service designer to help us find the answer. Ideally you would have experience in public services but other regulated services (banking, telcos, airlines etc) are relevant. Making change happen in big bureaucracies is hard.

You should be rigorous in your work, always seek to validate any ideas, and keep the citizen’s perspective at the centre of your thinking. You should be awesome at: - creating user personas (personae?) - organising, facilitating and leading workshops - 1-1 interviews - stakeholder management (making sure everyone is on board, from the bigwigs to the users) - keeping everyone informed and involving the right people in decisions - explaining the design process to people who don’t get it - coaching and helping more junior designers in their work *Gluten free alternatives available.

Understanding human behaviour: taking a more complex approach | Guardian Sustainable Business | Guardian Professional. Recent advances in behavioural economics, cognitive neuroscience, network theory and social psychology more generally have overturned our common sense understanding of human behaviour. The rational, autonomous, self-aware agent acting in his own self-interest according to static preferences has faded as we realise that behaviour is largely irrational, unconscious and driven by external contexts.

Ladies and gentleman, Homo economicus has left the building. Theory-in-theory vs theory-in-practice Despite the volume and accessibility of this new theoretical knowledge, behaviour change practice has been struggling to keep pace. As a result, we have seen a plethora of conferences, white papers and "units" emerge as both public and private sector organisations scramble to work out how this new knowledge can be ethically and effectively applied. Expose 3D printed desktop speakers by simon ellison. Jul 03, 2013 expose 3D printed desktop speakers by simon ellison ‘expose’ 3D printed desktop speakers by simon ellisonall images courtesy simon ellison new zealander designer simon ellison has utilized multi material 3D printing methods to bring forth the idea of a new manufacturing technique into the realm of speaker drivers. with this, the additive combination-material print process results as a solid construction, allowing for complex and structurally intricate details. working together with an audio engineer, the speaker is conceived to push the boundaries of traditional hi-fi sound design, exploring the ratios of digital material production. taking just over nine hours to print and three hours to clean, the driver assembly was put together with the coil and magnet of a traditional driver, and wired to allow capabilities for a mono speaker. the complete component construction fits within a glass housing, fully equipped with an RCA terminal. exploded view – component details Simon.Elison.

Design ROI - Measurable Design by Antti Pitkänen. Design for Public Good. First Look: Fab Unveils The Winners Of Its Design Open Call. Fab.com may be the web’s fastest growing e-commerce site, but its ambitions don’t stop there. The real aim, its founders have said, is to grow Fab into a global design brand--a stylish alternative to giants like Amazon and Wal-Mart--and the company has already designed over 3000 original products to that end.

In March, Fab announced another initiative for expanding its offerings: a crowdsourced competition, calling for designers around the world to submit their ideas for the company’s next big product. Now, they’ve narrowed the field down to 12 finalists--two of which you can see here for the first time--and announced a second competition, coinciding with this year’s International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City. The first Disrupting Design competition, which was held last month in Milan, drew submissions from over 150 international designers. "The winning designs all embody the Fab ethos," says Shellhammer, Fab’s founder and chief design officer. Visualizing the School of Design.

Untitled. Rethinking Design Thinking. Posted by Don Norman | 19 Mar 2013 | Comments (15) OK, I take it back. Well, some of it anyway. In June, 2010, I posted an essay on Core77 entitled "Design Thinking: A Useful Myth. " (Got a lot of responses, that one did.) I am here to say that I now have rethought my position. I've spent the last few months pondering the way designers work while I was hidden away, revising my book The Design of Everyday Things (DOET). Design methods. Designers have developed a number of techniques to avoid being captured by too facile a solution. Design thinking. Although I still stick to my major point that design thinking is not an exclusive property of designers—all great innovators have practiced it—I now do believe that designers have a special claim to it.

Of course, there is more to design thinking than what is described by the double-diamond or the iterative cycle of HCD. What should this collection of techniques be called?

LocalData, An App That Helps Communities Do Their Own Urban Planning. Imagine you’re a community organizer in Detroit. You want to convert an abandoned lot into a community garden, and to back up your case, you plan a local survey of families who might use it. You organize a band of volunteers--mostly teens and retirees--who are willing to canvas the neighborhood. You arm them with your paper survey and send them off. After a few weeks, the team has collected a couple hundred data points. Then the real work begins: You must transcribe every survey by hand and pay an urban planner to analyze and map the results. It’s an expensive and tedious process--and in many cases, it’s out of reach for people interested in effecting change in their own communities. “All across the nation, community groups are out in their neighborhoods, collecting information about where they live,” says urban planner Alicia Rouault.

How does LocalData work? Rouault, Hampel, and Singh developed the app while working with urban planners and community advocates in Detroit.
