*All Things Motorcycle* *All Things Motorcycle* - Weight Management. The majority of my recent safety presentation dealt with weight and traction management. I was surprised by some of the feedback I got during the presentation which demonstrated some fundamental misunderstandings of reality. For example, when I asked what percentage of the total weight of a motorcycle is typically found on the front tire I was told 50%. After the presentation I asked the person who volunteered that answer how he came up with it. He said that he just assumed that no matter how much a motorcycle weighs, if it had two wheels then each would carry half the weight; if it had three, each would carry a third; and if, like a car, it had four then each would carry a fourth of the weight. He did not realize that where the Center of Gravity is relative to the wheels determines how much of the weight is on those wheels. Using that assumption as a baseline I then went on to describe the effect of wind drag.
