Formative vs Summative « Kristy Wilhite's EDTECH Portfolio. Cc licensed @ flikr.com I have often heard the terms “formative” and “summative” through out my career. In my school district we as teachers are evaluated on two different scales, formative or summative. When on the formative cycles, we are observed teaching a lesson four times a year by an administrator or supervisor.

We first met before to discuss what the lesson is and the projected outcomes then meet after the observation to discuss what went right and what went wrong as well as suggestions as to what else can be done. But After this week’s readings, I am surprised about how much work actual goes into formative and summative evaluations. I know that the evaluation I go through are very different then the evaluations that are done to review a new program, software, textbook, etc. The purpose of formative evaluations is to gather information to improve instruction. Instructional Design Models Models, like myths and metaphors, help us to make sense of our world. Whether derived from whim or from serious research, a model offers its user a means of comprehending an otherwise incomprehensible problem. An instructional design model gives structure and meaning to an I.D. problem, enabling the would-be designer to negotiate her design task with a semblance of conscious understanding. Models help us to visualize the problem, to break it down into discrete, manageable units. The value of a specific model is determined within the context of use. Like any other instrument, a model assumes a specific intention of its user.
