There is a movie called Koyaanisqatsi, the word is Hopi Indian, and apparently means: 1. crazy life; 2. life in turmoil; 3. life out of balance; 4. life disintegrating; 5. a state of life that calls for another way of living. That sounds like a pretty fair way of describing the global instability of recent current events to me. Simultaneously there are a great many positive things happening as we struggle to break through into an essentially saner paradigm.

That paradigm is variously referred to as the Gaia, planetary, egalitarian, solar, or post-modern, but essentially survivable, paradigm. My purpose here is not to dwell on the world's ills: it's too depressing. Cohousing and ecovillages. Cohousing and eco-villages are two innovative forms of settlement which have evolved since the 1960s.

Cohousing and ecovillages

They have different definitions and histories. Most cohousing groups are in urban settings, and most eco-villages in rural locations. Environmental sustainability is of prime importance for eco-villages, but this is only true for some cohousing groups. However, there is now some interest, and a number of examples, of projects which are both eco-villages and cohousing communities. This section offers a brief definition of the two concepts. Living together in a cohousing community. Cohousing. Cohousing is a housing development movement that started in the late 1960s in Denmark, where it is called Bofaellesskaber or 'living communities'.

Cohousing

With increasing numbers of women going to work there was a desire to reduce the burden of housework, and in particular childcare and evening meals, through shared communal services. Cohousing is also seen to improve social relations and develop a sense of community. What started as a middle-class housing solution popular with young families, is now a well established housing model for all social groups, and has spread to a number of Northern European countries where governmental policy and funding has encouraged development.

It is also becoming increasingly popular in the US, Canada and New Zealand, where cohousing has a more explicit environmental agenda, sharing many similarities with ecovillages but usually in a less radical, smaller and more urban version. The cohousing concept originated in Denmark in the early 1970s, and was introduced to the English-speaking world in the late 1980s by the inspirational book "Cohousing: A Contemporary Approach to Housing Ourselves" by architects Kathryn McCamant and Charles Durrett. Since its inception this concept of "living community" has spread quickly. There are now hundreds of cohousing communities around the world, from Europe to North America, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. What is Cohousing? Cohousing and community on the coast.

Mixing up the models: Cohousing & Community Land Trusts Increasingly cohousing groups are enquiring about how they might learn from the community land trust sector to provide long term affordable housing solutions for people on middle and low incomes that are priced out of the housing market.

Using the CLT model to acheive long term affordability

Legal mechanisms developed by local community land trust's have been successfully applied in a variety of contexts (mainly rural to date but several urban schemes are in the advance planning stages) to prevent private speculation and retain the affordability of a property beyond the initial purchaser. The Mutual Home Ownership model is a good mechanism to consider alongside the options below. The Community Land Trust Network website has excellent resources outlining the different development approaches of CLT's, financial planning tools and template documents for partnering with housing associations (of which i have sign posted a number of cohousing groups to).

Viikki Eco Neighbourhood Street in Viikki During the period 1998 to 2002, an experimental area of ecological building of international importance is being constructed at Viikki, a district to the Northeast of the centre of Helsinki. During the preparation of the local plan, there was a lively public debate about the ecology of land use and building, and great potential was seen in Viikki for an experiment in environmentally-conscious building.

( The growth of cohousing in Europe. While community living is not a new phenomenon, one must acknowledge that with the success of cohousing, the idea is being spread for the first time on a global scale.

If globalization tends to destroy cultural variation, the flexibility of cohousing has allowed it to resist that trend and to adapt to people’s needs in different cultural contexts. A look at how cohousing is being implemented in Europe demonstrates that idea. Dammen.dk » Om Dammen.dk. Sættedammen. Living together – Cohousing Ideas and Realities Around the World.

This book, edited by Professor Dick Urban Vestbro, is the most comprehensive documentation available about housing with common spaces and shared facilities. It is based on the first International Conference on Collaborative Housing, which took place in Stockholm, Sweden in May 2010. The book contains all 11 plenary papers, three specially written papers and elaborate reports from the 16 conference workshops. It includes examples from Europe, North America, Australia, Japan and other countries. With its 234 pages and 180 illustrations it is an excellent source for researchers, housing companies, politicians, activists and non-government organizations interested in how to solve challenges such as the ageing of societies and other transformations in household structures, how to relate to problems of urban anonymity and isolation, and how to promote gender equality, neighborly cooperation and sustainable lifestyles.
