4 - Civic virtue. Arguments about civic virtue In the previous chapter, I examined Aristotle's aristocratic way of thinking about politics and considered how he integrates what we see as ‘democratic elements’ into his aristocratic framework.
In the present and following chapters, I shall turn to the issue of what conceptual framework Aristotle uses to analyse and cultivate the ideal of equality among citizens. Public Administration and Deliberative Civic Engagement. December 16, 2010 by Tina Nabatchi Public administration (both as an academic discipline and professional field) must take deliberative civic engagement processes seriously.
There are a number of deliberative civic engagement models, but all embrace public deliberation, and many embrace deliberative democracy. Broadly defined, public deliberation refers to a diverse group of people engaging in reasoned discussion and rigorous problem analysis with an eye toward finding agreeable high-quality solutions for a public issue. Deliberative democracy refers to infusing government decision making with the collective judgment of citizens arrived at through deliberation. There are at least three reasons why the public should take deliberative civic engagement seriously. Civil society. Civil society is the "aggregate of non-governmental organizations and institutions that manifest interests and will of citizens.
" Civil society includes the family and the private sphere, referred to as the "third sector" of society, distinct from government and business. Dictionary.com's 21st Century Lexicon defines civil society as 1) the aggregate of non-governmental organizations and institutions that manifest interests and will of citizens or 2) individuals and organizations in a society which are independent of the government. Sometimes the term civil society is used in the more general sense of "the elements such as freedom of speech, an independent judiciary, etc, that make up a democratic society" (Collins English Dictionary). Especially in the discussions among thinkers of Eastern and Central Europe, civil society is seen also as a concept of civic values.
One widely known representative of this concept is the Polish former dissident Adam Michnik. Etymology G. Robert D. Putnam. Robert David Putnam (born January 9, 1941; Rochester, New York) is a political scientist and Malkin Professor of Public Policy at the Harvard University John F.
Kennedy School of Government. He is also currently serving as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Aarhus University in Denmark, and was formerly a visiting professor and director of the Manchester Graduate Summer Programme in Social Change, University of Manchester (UK). Putnam developed the influential two-level game theory that assumes international agreements will only be successfully brokered if they also result in domestic benefits.

First published Tue May 1, 2001; substantive revision Mon Mar 29, 2010 Aristotle conceives of ethical theory as a field distinct from the theoretical sciences.
Its methodology must match its subject matter—good action—and must respect the fact that in this field many generalizations hold only for the most part. We study ethics in order to improve our lives, and therefore its principal concern is the nature of human well-being. Aristotle follows Socrates and Plato in taking the virtues to be central to a well-lived life. Like Plato, he regards the ethical virtues (justice, courage, temperance and so on) as complex rational, emotional and social skills. THE IMPORTANCE OF THE CULTURE OF PEACE by Talbot. What does 'a Culture of Peace' mean? By Genevieve Talbot, United Nations Association of Canada “Since wars began in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed” (UNESCO constitutional principle). ALTERNATIVE CONCEPTS OF PEACE. While conflict, violence, and war have been much studied and analyzed, little similar effort has been devoted to peace. Undeniably, peace is sometimes the object or subject of a work, as in studying the management of conflict, termination of war, or the tools for peacemaking or peacekeeping.
And there have been some efforts to directly study or analyze the meaning of peace.2 Usually, however, peace is an assumed category of analysis, given even less treatment than in Quincy Wright's A Study of War (1942) in which five out of 1495 pages were devoted to the meaning of peace.3 This general neglect is unfortunate.4 For a perspective on peace is ipso facto a perspective on violence: they are parts of the same theory. For example, a view that peace is the opposite of violence and thereby good underlies the pacifist analysis of violence, its costs and nonviolent strategies. Civil Society. The 2015 edition of the Global Risks report completes a decade of highlighting the most significant long-term risks worldwide, drawing on the perspectives of experts and global decision-makers.
Over that time, analysis has moved from risk identification to thinking through risk interconnections and the potentially cascading effects that result. Taking this effort one step further, this year’s report underscores potential causes as well as solutions to global risks. Not only do we set out a view on 28 global risks in the report’s traditional categories (economic, environmental, societal, geopolitical and technological) but also we consider the drivers of those risks in the form of 13 trends. In addition, we have selected initiatives for addressing significant challenges, which we hope will inspire collaboration among business, government and civil society communities. Mapping Global Risks in 2015 The world is, however, insufficiently prepared for an increasingly complex risk environment. 2014 Global Peace Index REPORT.pdf. Rangsit University - SSL VPN Service. World peace? These are the only 11 countries in the world that are actually free from conflict - World Politics.
But experts believe this is actually almost universally the case, according to a think-tank which produces one of the world’s leading measures of “global peacefulness” – and things are only going to get worse. It may make for bleak reading, but of the 162 countries covered by the Institute for Economics and Peace’s (IEP’s) latest study, just 11 were not involved in conflict of one kind or another. Worse still, the world as a whole has been getting incrementally less peaceful every year since 2007 – sharply bucking a trend that had seen a global move away from conflict since the end of the Second World War. WHAT IS PEACE? CONCEPTS, QUALITIES, AND SOCIAL CONTRACT. Peace has always been among humanity's highest values--for some, supreme. Consider: "Peace at any price. "1 "The most disadvantageous peace is better than the most just war. "2 "Peace is more important than all justice.
"3 "I prefer the most unjust peace to the justest war that was ever waged. "4 "There never was a good war or a bad peace. "5 Yet, we agree little on what is peace.
