About The Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education

We face the common challenge of how to help students develop both a conceptual understanding of the universe of information and a practical understanding of how to locate, manage, use and create information, in the face of diminishing resources, demands for demonstrating student success, and an increasingly complex information landscape Teaching can be a solitary undertaking, and so can learning, but new approaches to teaching and learning show clearly that collaboration – within and across disciplines – can lead to uncovering enduring understandings that lead to deep learning and the emergence of students as creators of information, not just consumers. To complete this learning circle, faculty can look to librarians as partners in the academic mission. A content… A common language… A context…

Intersections of Scholarly Communication and Information Literacy

Written by a working group of leaders from many parts of the association, this white paper explores and articulates three intersections between scholarly communication and information literacy. The paper also provides strategies for librarians from different backgrounds to initiate collaborations within their own campus environments between information literacy and scholarly communication. Use the chapter numbers at the top of this page, or the drop-down Chapters menu, to navigate the white paper. Information Literacy – The Umbrella for All 21st Century Literacies. As a member of the 21st century workforce skills movement, the practice of information literacy nurtures the development of a critical skill set needed so that any learner and/or worker can thrive and compete effectively in today’s global digital economy.

Information Literacy – The Umbrella for All 21st Century Literacies

As we move further into the 21st century, we are convinced that information literacy will become the standard-bearer for academic achievement, workforce productivity, competitive advantage, and national security. Definition of Information Literacy Information literacy refers to a constellation of competencies revolving around information research, use, and practice across all occupations and professions. It is the foundation for effective, lifelong learning practice, personal, and professional empowerment. Who Gets to Graduate? In 1999, at the beginning of the fall semester, Laude combed through the records of every student in his freshman chemistry class and identified about 50 who possessed at least two of the “adversity indicators” common among students who failed the course in the past: low SATs, low family income, less-educated parents.

Who Gets to Graduate?

He invited them all to apply to a new program, which he would later give the august-sounding name the Texas Interdisciplinary Plan, or TIP. Students in TIP were placed in their own, smaller section of Chemistry 301, taught by Laude. But rather than dumb down the curriculum for them, Laude insisted that they master exactly the same challenging material as the students in his larger section. In fact, he scheduled his two sections back to back. “I taught my 500-student chemistry class, and then I walked upstairs and I taught this 50-student chemistry class,” Laude explained.

FYE 1220 Curriculum Map. Digital Citizenship. The enduring relevance of a liberal-arts education. The relevance, cost and value of a college education have been hot topics lately on various media platforms. The discussion often seems to be just an exchange of point-counterpoint broadsides among proponents and opponents of a liberal-arts education. As president of a liberal-arts college, I won’t pretend to be neutral. I have benefited from, and believe in, studying the distinctive blend of the humanities, science and the arts that is the essence of a liberal-arts education. In fact, I recently wrote a letter to the editor of The New York Times defending the humanities as part of a well-rounded education.

I believe a liberal-arts education is the best preparation a young person can have for success in life. As I said in my letter, we prepare students to lead meaningful, considered lives, to flourish in multiple careers, and to be informed, engaged citizens of their communities and the world.
