Oregon's forests define the rugged character of our state. Protecting and restoring our forest legacy. Unfortunately, Oregon's forests are facing increasing pressure from logging and development. Worse, the drive to allow logging and development in these pristine areas is diverting time and resources away from other important activities — such as protecting our communities from forest fires and promoting a vision for meeting our timber needs without harming the environment.

Portland Architecture: The Columbia Gorge's secret Eden: a visit to The Shire. Multnomah Falls from The Shire (photo by Brian Libby) The directions guided us to an industrial parking lot on State Route 14 in Washington, maybe 10 miles east of the last city we’d passed, Washougal, before entering the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. Moments after we arrived, a shuttle van appeared to take us the rest of the way, into The Shire with its breathtaking views of Multnomah Falls across the river.

At first the van drove us through a thin, winding dirt path, but then all of a sudden, as happens at the end of a drive to the coast, the view jumped out like a movie screen suddenly illuminating a darkened theater. Before I could stop myself, I blurted out a series of four-letter words, all meant to convey the idea of, “Wow!” This was one sublime natural setting, and all within 40 minutes' drive of central-city Portland.

The desert southeast of Bend has not just Crack in the Ground, but also Hole in the Ground and Big Hole. All three are worth a visit. It's called Crack in the Ground, but "Volcanic Fissure in the Ground" would actually be a slightly more accurate name for the geologic feature southeast of Bend. A mere thousand years ago, lava flows fractured the earth near what is now called Christmas Valley, forming Crack in the Ground. Stroll in and explore its length, walking on sand and sharp rock, sometimes climbing over =-boulders, oohing and aahing at the mosses and rock formations that line the walls.

The feature some locals call "The Crack" stays cool enough that you can find ice in the bottom during the desert's scorching summers. PHOTO BY ROSS WILLIAM HAMILTON Summer in the Pacific Northwest is made for walking. We enjoy the longer hours of daylight, our trails have finally dried out and we have so many beautiful places to go. Our roads take us to many of those places, but to see the best of the best we need to get out and hike. And sometimes not very far. Here we present some of the region's most scenic hikes.

The Gorge. Damnation Creek Trail is the best place to explore the magic of Northern California's redwood coast. View full sizeZach UrnessBig trees, big solitude (especially in winter): The Damnation Creek Trail is a perfect mix of cliffy coastline and majestic redwoods not too far south of the Oregon border. The first time I heard about a trail that made use of "damnation," that fun, old-timey word, I knew I had to check it out. The fact that Damnation Creek Trail -- that's the official name -- drops through old-growth redwoods to a remote ocean beach made it even more appealing. But it wasn't until I hiked this 4.4-mile trail that I discovered, much to my surprise, that this fairly unknown path is the best way to explore the Crescent City, Calif., area, about 20 miles south of the Oregon border. The reason is simple. Most people who head to the northern California coast near Crescent City experience the redwoods and beach separately.

And that's fine. But Damnation Creek takes all those highlights, the old-growth monsters and rugged ocean beach, and combines them in one magic section of trail. 12 best places you've never heard of. A missing link in the Springwater Corridor Trail is about to be closed. Construction continues on the trailhead at the east end of the trail in Boring. Called Boring Station, it will have parking for 30 vehicles. Though the construction site is still a mess now, it will be the showcase of Boring once completed early next year.

The Springwater Corridor Trail is a railroad line that has been converted to a trail for hiking, biking and horseback riding. When the Boring end is finished, the trail will be paved from the Hawthorne Bridge in downtown Portland to Boring, except for a short diversion to neighborhood streets in inner Southeast Portland. The project has been ongoing for more than two decades, when Portland's park bureau began acquiring the land in 1990. I remember riding the Springwater from my home at Mount Tabor to both ends, on June 17, 1992. The paved surface will make it a lot easier. While work continues in Boring, the continuation of the old railroad is available for use.
