Reflections on Local by Social and what needs to happen now - Simon's posterous. 17 Jun 2010 I attended the Local by Social event yesterday, which was inspired by a recent NESTA pamphlet of the same name. The event brought together people who work in local government and social innovators to discuss what impact social media and social networking can have in realising what has been dubbed public services 2.0 . I don't work in local government, nor am I a social innovator, but I find the subject fascinating as both a citizen and someone who has worked in social media and digital service design for years. These are my reflections on the day.

One of my favourite lines for putting social media in context is " it's not about new tools, it's about new behaviours " and it featured here from the speakers. Yet in the group discussions afterwards the tools still dominated. Twitter this and Facebook that. Someone needs to start to put all this stuff in the context of social marketing and behavioural economics. Why was this? A local government technology leap. Find ‘Em On Twitter: 15 Twitter Directories Compared. Searching for people or applications on Twitter? Good luck with that. Since Twitter offers little in the way of people search features (though they now have a suggestion tool), your search for interesting and dynamic people to follow and applications to use could be a giant time suck. Thankfully there are more than a few third-party resources that you can turn to for finding new people to follow, and new tools to help you do what Twitter won't let you.

We'll shed a little light on these 15 directories by separating them into four categories: applications, people, politics, and strictly business. Applications Twitter Fan Wiki Overview: The apps section of Twitter Fan Wiki is like Wikipedia for Twitter apps, so it's for you, buy you mentality, making it the most robust in terms of applications listed, but potentially the most unreliable if entries aren't current. What you won't get: There's a limited feature set, which means you can rate, sort, or comment on applications.

FoodCycle is a great charity that uses the food rejected by supermarkets to feed people at risk of food poverty and social isolation. Facebook Marketing is a topic we’ve covered for several years and with the significant increase in Facebook users there’s even more interest in how to make sense of what people do there. I’ve seen a significant increase in referring traffic from Facebook to web pages over the past 6 months and while a lot of that lift comes from marketing activities, I don’t anticipate the trend in Facebook users leaving to visit websites slowing down any time soon. Army Golden Knights: SFC Dave Herwig (@gkdave), SGM Steve Young (@gksteve), LTC Joe Martin (gkjoe) My presentation on how to leverage Social Media SEO to improve the reach and effectiveness of blog content for marketing at OpenCa.mp DFW this weekend ended up being a lot of information in a very short period of time. The use of a video interview I did with Brian Clark as the segue into my presentation ate into some of the 30 minutes I had to present plus I simply had too many slides. (Thanks to Lt Colonel Joe Martin for the photo taken right after the presentation. His team were literally sponges for information at the event.) The good news is that there’s Slideshare, so I’ve embeded a copy of that presentation below. Chris Pirillo and Brian Clark gave witty, informative and entertaining presentations on blogging and copywriting for blogs before me, so the stage was set to talk about marketing that blog content. Check out the presentation below and let me know what you think.

NBA, adidas Use Social Media to Engage Fans Online During All-Star Game by Jason Peck. Leading up to and during the NBA All-Star Game last night, there were some great videos and initiatives created by the league and brands like adidas to insert themselves in the conversation online and engage fans. Here are some things I noticed. Facebook/All-Star Game Live Streaming Facebook, TNT and the NBA teamed up to live stream the NBA All-Star Game online and pull in fan conversations in the same page via Facebook Connect. Fans could watch the activities last night live on TNT’s website and choose from any of the four different camera angles available. While they were watching online, all the conversations from Facebook from the other people who were watching were pulled in to the page on the right side.

Say hello to AriGoldFish and Lloyd (w/ an appearance from @realchopstick) #LoveSaturdays. Farewell, World Cup; Hello, Misogynistic Media. Guest post by Bryce Keane I’m aware that it’s now been more than a month since the World Cup ended, with Spain taking home their very first victory ever. And, in all fairness, I almost let this post go. Image: Axel Bührmann, Creative Commons But the truth is that there was something that really really began to grind my gears as the Cup went on.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually got quite into the spirit of the whole thing (not bad for a guy from a country in which “soccer” is far down the list in terms of national support levels) and really enjoyed the getting along to the local pub to catch as many games as I could. What I didn’t like was reading about those very same games the next day.

Why? Because I quickly grew tired of what I perceived to be an ongoing, latent, misogynistic response from the UK sports media here as they increasingly looked for any wife and/or girlfriend (known as “WAGs” here in the UK) on which to blame a team’s entirely lacklustre performance. Why? She had a point. Brands. Shanik Dassenaike says I absolutely have to choose GiffGaff! I would choose Apple, what with their success with the iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4 and also the new Nanos and Shuffles; but to me, GiffGaff represent good service, amazing value for money and how well you can do in just a year! Their marketing strategy is clever in more ways than one - a consumer knows what a consumer wants, and costs are kept down by using the community.

In addition, using their user base to deliver customer support makes everything so much quicker than having to call customer service and deal with menus that don't make sense, as well as that most of the time what you're looking for will already be on the site. Their innovations in keeping mobile phone communication simple should set an example to other networks, most likely starting with the small ones like supermarket networks and making its way up to the big networks.
