There has been a steady flow of facts, figures, infographics, and videos pouring out across the web lately that attempt to describe just how vast the Internet is. Honestly, it’s a tough job. The Internet continues to explode every day and is still accelerating the rate of expansion. From the 30 hours of YouTube videos uploaded every minute to the 6 million Facebook views per minute, you’re not alone when thinking that the Internet is bonkers.

In The Classroom But how do you actually explain all this to a classroom of students hugging their smartphones? For example, you can quiz students on how many new LinkedIn accounts they think are started every single minute… or how much data (in terms of GB) is transferred in 60 seconds around the web. Over the past few years, we've seen social media used in the job market in a number of ways — startups, small businesses and large corporations alike are diving into the socialverse to find top talent, and job seekers are likewise getting creative with social media.

Social media monitoring service Reppler recently surveyed more than 300 hiring professionals to determine when and how job recruiters are screening job candidates on different social networks. The study found that more than 90% of recruiters and hiring managers have visited a potential candidate's profile on a social network as part of the screening process. And a whopping 69% of recruiters have rejected a candidate based on content found on his or her social networking profiles — an almost equal proportion of recruiters (68%), though, have hired a candidate based on his or her presence on those networks.

Facing the realities and the stiff competition from Wikipedia, the Encyclopedia Britannica will now focus primarily on their online services. But even then, it might be too late. Wikipedia has grown to be the number one source for students. In fact, many students will stop research and change topics if it’s not on Wikipedia.

Wikipedia provides a wealth of information with over 26 billion pages of content. Share this graphic! Share this graphic! UsefulTools If Only. Uses 4 Old iPad. Textsee3. The History Of The Modem. It doesn’t seem that long ago that I was sitting at my computer, waiting to go online while my torturously slow 56K modem whistled and screeched its way onto the World Wide Web. Fast forward more than a decade and I am now spoilt with my broadband wireless connection which kicks the pants off a 56K modem any day of the week. Now I can watch ABBA on YouTube on the toilet with my iPad without that constant irritating buffering spinning circle. Thanks to the advances in modems and Internet speeds, it is now possible to stream music and video and view interactive webpages without interruption.

We’re entering an era where anything before broadband and 3G is becoming an obsolete dinosaur and now 4G and T1 are starting to mark their territory. In fact, I don’t know a single soul who uses a 56K modem anymore. Everyone is getting upgraded to broadband, even the country folks. But when were modems invented and who invented them? That little note may seem self-congratulatory to the average Internet user, but it's vitally important. Slowing that number by just 4/10ths of a second, for example, would cut 8 million searches from Google's daily total of 3 billion. If its pages took one second longer to load, Amazon, for example, could lose as much as $1.6 billion in annual revenue. These and other findings are included in a smart new infographic (see below) from OnlineGraduatePrograms that sheds light on the need for speed when it comes to Web page design.

All of this emphasis on instant gratification comes at a time when the Internet is trending towards being more visual, meaning Web designers need to find ways to create image-heavy sites that still load quickly. How Higher Education Is Going Digital [INFOGRAPHIC] People are talking about digital tech's opportunity to improve the classroom.

Much of the discussion has been focused on digital textbooks. Apple's recent announcement of iBooks for education has caused a stir over whether texts delivered on an expensive and propriety device like the iPad are really feasible. Meanwhile at the university level, many schools are dipping their toes in the promise of a digital future, and it's not just about textbooks. The folks at OnlineUniversities.com have compiled the infographic below that explores the pros and cons of various platforms and technologies that have found their way into the halls of higher ed.

[Infographic] If you want evidence of the way the internet is pervading every aspect of our lives, you need look no further than its effect on education.

The internet and social media have dramatically changed both teaching and learning. In fact, most students’ (an incredible 93 percent) first instinct when confronted with a research problem is to turn to Google or Bing to get information rather than going to the library, and despite the best efforts of faculty to discourage its use, Wikipedia is the research resource that is used most often. It’s not only students that are turning to the web, however.

A whopping 90 percent of faculty uses social media in the courses they’re teaching, and 8 in 10 have used online video in class. In addition, colleges and universities are reaching out to students in a way they never could before—85 percent of admissions offices use some sort of social media, from video blogging to social networking. Every 60 Seconds 175,000 Tweets Are Sent [INFOGRAPHIC] 592 Flares Filament.io 592 Flares × If you think about what you can do in 60 seconds in your life, it is probably not very much. Yet, if we look at all people using Social Media for just 60 seconds, the amount of messages being sent is quite incredible. For example, every 60 seconds, there are over 700,000 messages being delivered on Facebook, 2,000 000 videos are being watched and 175,000 Tweets are sent on Twitter.

Funnily enough, I bet, not all of those will be tweeted at optimal times. This is especially crazy as it doesn’t seem to stop, even if other networks are added to the mix. It doesn’t seem to harm the buzz of the other Social Networks in any way. All these figures are quite mindblowing if you add them up together. How about you?
