Lefranc & Bourgeois - Our creative artists. Color Mixing...You can't get it unless you do it! By Patti Brady I had been given what to me seemed like the daunting task of writing an article on color mixing and to introduce the new Modern Theory Color Mixing Set.

Color Mixing...You can't get it unless you do it!

I was more than slightly astonished that I was the designated writer! We have an amazing number of wonderful painters working for Golden Artist Colors, many in highly technical capacities, and several who taught color at prestigious Universities. Coupled with that, these artists work with pigments using scales (for precision mixing ratios), spectrophotometers (for measuring color), special lighting, light boxes, and some truly amazing computer programs! My approach to color as an artist has always been to just play and you'll discover. There are probably as many theories of the correct color mixing palette for artists as there are artists that promote them.

The Modern Theory Color Mixing Set includes just seven colors plus Titanium White. Why Only Organic Pigments in the Modern Theory Color Mixing Set? Range of Skin Tones. Pigments Artist of the Month. Joanne Mattera combed through 416 submissions, and whittled it down to a group of 50 artists whose work will be featured in the book, (you didn’t fall for that silly talk about 18, did you?). Joanne has also written a fabulous and extensive essay about contemporary encaustic that will be illustrated with artwork culled from submissions. Our original thinking was that this essay could be an opportunity to provide a sort of honorable mention and allow us to include a few more artists, but now that we’ve read the essay and seen the artwork, we see it differently. The essay is more like the meat and potatoes of the book; the portfolio section, which will feature 29 artists, is the dessert! We therefore consider all artists featured in the book, whether with one image or a portfolio spread, equal winners.

Utrecht’s Retail Art Supply Store Blog. Written by: the_expert The application of size or “sizing” helps watercolor paper hold up to heavy soaking and repeated wetting, and gives colors “sparkle”. But, what exactly is “sizing”? Sizes or “sizings” for paper and cloth are additives that fill pores, impart stiffness and help maintain flatness. Without adequate sizing, even light washes can cause paper to buckle. A variety of materials are used as paper sizes. Some painters avoid animal products, and prefer not to use papers sized with gelatin. Artists who prefer not to use animal-derived art materials can select Utrecht French Premium Watercolor Paper, sized with animal-free starch sizing. The best watercolor paper is made of rag fiber. Rag paper on its own lacks the stiff, crisp quality we associate with watercolor sheets. Paper can be internally and/or externally sized.

Good paper brings watercolors and gouache to their best advantage, providing a dimensionally stable surface with a brilliant reflective quality.
