Terracotta Warriors of Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum 始皇帝陵出土 兵馬俑. Biography of Maria Martinez and San Ildefonso Pottery. Sharing Art: Found Object Sculpture. Make Terracotta Army Sculptures, Making Process. MaterialsExperts have confirmed that the material used to mould the terracotta warriors and horses is a "yellow earth" sourced from around the mausoleum.
The yellow earth is easy to obtain, and is proved to be an appropriate material due to its adhesive quality and plasticity. The earth underwent screening and grinding to remove impurities and to ensure it was fine and pure. Moreover, a certain amount of white grit which contained quartz sand, mica and feldspar was added. Adding grit to the earth strengthened its mechanical properties which allowed the large terracotta warriors and horses to be easily shaped. Figure CreationExperts have reconstructed the techniques for making the warriors by repeatedly observing, comparing and researching the figures during their sorting out and preparatory work. The Making of Terracotta Warrior's Head: the shaping of the head is generally acknowledged to be the most difficult, and the procedure was very complicated.

As a father to three boys, the director of exhibitions at the Lawrence Art Center in Lawrence, Kansas, and a ceramic sculptor selling and exhibiting his work in a handful of exhibitions per year, one might wonder when he finds time to eat or sleep. But he manages with his strong work ethic and by staying active and engaged in all three areas. To say the very least, as a mother of ONE small boy with a full time job and a strong desire to make work, I am pretty much in awe of Ben. In today’s post, he explains how he manages to make it all come together (without completely losing his mind). I am going to try some of his strategies to make it all work (without completely losing my mind). Jennifer Harnetty, editor. Artist Mark Powell, whose work we’ve shared in the past, draws some extraordinarily realistic ink portraits of sweet, wrinkled faces on antique envelopes that date as far back as the mid-19th century. Since he first impressed us with his envelope portraits, the Londoner has continued to expand his collection of heartwarming works, forcing us to share some of the incredible, detailed renditions he has added to his growing portfolio.
Each envelope that Powell transforms maintains its original adornment of stamps and handwritten mailing addresses, giving it an authentic feel and adding a bit of history, as is the artist’s intention. The visage of these matured subjects only serve to accentuate the mapping of time. Their frail faces are masked atop an equally fragile, folded sheet of paper, creating a sort of invisible timestamp. This tarpon sculpture is made entirely out of sunglasses parts and lenses. Costa Sunglasses made a splash when it unveiled images of one-of-a-kind, hand built fish sculptures of a tarpon, blue marlin and bass built entirely out of its own sunglass parts in an advertising campaign last year.
Two of these sculptures have since found new homes with some worthy organizations. Costa donated its tarpon fish sculpture to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) to be put on display inside its Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum. First opened in January 1999, the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame & Museum attracts 75,000 guests each year who come to view one of the largest repositories of sport fishing history. The blue marlin sculpture has been donated to The Billfish Foundation (TBF) , a longtime Costa partner. A mix of lenses, hinges, frame arms, nose pads, side shields and retainer cord segments from hundreds of Costa sunglasses went into building the mounted fish sculptures. Speed Drawing. Embedded by Embedded Video Recently, we came across the greatly talented Boey who is the artist behind these whimsical and witty DIY Styrofoam cups. How many of you have tried to write people’s names on Styrofoam cups at a party and found it a bit bumpy even when using a ballpoint pen?
This talented individual has perfected his use of a sharpie marker on this drawing surface. You can see his whole collection on his flickr page (or some of my personal favourites below). He also keeps a journal documenting his daily experiences which I found to be pretty funny. Via SwissMiss. Carbon Fiber Fish Sculptures – Racing Meets Art. “Racing Sturgeon” With 14 years experience working in Formula One racing, it’s easy to see where artist Alastair Gibson gets his inspiration. Drawing similarities between modern Grand Prix cars and game fish, Alastair undertook a series of sculptures using F1 parts and technology to show these unique fish in a different form. “Red Racing Piranha 2″ His works have been exhibited in the 2003 Lucky Strike Tribe Art Exhibitions, which started at the Boiler House, Brick Lane, London and then moved to Tokyo, Milan, Frankfurt, Jakarta and a solo exhibition in Rome. Alastair has exhibited in galleries in Cape Town and Johannesburg South Africa, London, Monaco and recently at the 2009 Chelsea Art Fair.

Shark sculpture. The world-famous Headington Shark. (Photo courtesy of James Turnbull under Creative Commons license.) The world-famous and often photographed Headington Shark celebrated its 25th anniversary on Tuesday, according to the Oxford Mail. The fiberglass shark was created by artist John Buckley and placed on the roof of Bill Heine in 1986. The shark celebrated its 25th birthday with a street party featuring a book-signing by Heine who recently wrote a book about the story behind the fiberglass shark.
Heine had originally placed the shark on his roof to mark the 41st anniversary of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki, Japan in World War II. The appearance of the shark almost immediately drew criticism along with a threat from the Oxford City Council to remove the shark by force, according to the Oxford Mail. Amstel Light & Bass Ale Bottle Cap Fish: John T. Unger Sculptural Firebowls + Art. Befor Budweiser came out with the red colored cap they use now, I was saving Amstel Light Caps as the only real source of red other than Coke… It's pretty hard to come by Coca Cola caps where I am, since everything comes in plastic these days.
Anyway, I finally used them on this fish and was totally blown away by how gorgeous they turned out. The red and gold with black lettering just gleams when the sun hits it and has a totally different effect than I could have guessed just by looking at the caps jumbled up in a bin. The key here is aligning the caps precisely. You can get a sense of how good they look in the second photo, but this one really just has to be seen in person to get the full effect.
I'm definitely going to do more using these. Technorati tags: Artsculpturerecycleecologyfishtroutbottle capbeer capmosaic fishmosaic troutdesignculture. Heron and Fish.
