High dose concentration administration of ascorbic acid inhibits tumor growth in BALB/C mice implanted with sarcoma 180 cancer cells via the restriction of angiogenesis. Ascorbic acid: Chemistry, biology and the treatment of cancer. Intravenous Vitamin C Published Clinical Results by Other Groups. This phase I clinical trial evaluated the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of high-dose intravenous (i.v.) ascorbic acid as a monotherapy in patients with advanced solid tumors refractory to standard therapy.
Five cohorts of three patients received i.v. ascorbic acid administered at 1 g/min for 4 consecutive days/week for 4 weeks, starting at 30 g/m(2) in the first cohort. For subsequent cohorts, dose was increased by 20 g/m(2) until a maximum tolerated dose was found. Ascorbic acid was eliminated by simple first-order kinetics. Half-life and clearance values were similar for all patients of all cohorts (2.0 ± 0.6 h, 21 ± 5 dL/h m(2), respectively). C max and AUC values increased proportionately with dose between 0 and 70 g/m(2), but appeared to reach maximal values at 70 g/m(2) (49 mM and 220 h mM, respectively).
Doses of 70, 90, and 110 g/m(2) maintained levels at or above 10-20 mM for 5-6 h. Source Abstract Review Articles. Neil Riordan IVC — A comprehensive collection on IVC Literature and Therapies. Higher than RDA vitamin C intakes have been associated with increases in HDL cholesterol, decreases in LDL cholesterol oxidation, decreased blood pressure, and decreased cardiovascular mortality. Vitamin C enhances non-heme iron absorption in individuals with low iron status. Helpfulness has been reported for severe attacks of ulcerative colitis, advanced human cancer, and reticulum cell sarcoma. Doses in these reports ranged from 50 to 150 gm intravenous per day, with no adverse effects reported.
Higher dose vitamin C (170 mg/kg/24 hours) was shown to have no adverse effects upon guinea pigs. Vitamin C Therapy (Studies): Vitamin C Therapy (Products): Vitamin C Therapy (Stability Issues): Ascorbic acid gradually darkens on exposure to light.

Antioxidant Role of Ascorbic Acid and His Protective Effects on Chronic Diseases. 1. Introduction Ascorbic acid (AA), commonly known as vitamin C, plays an important role in the human body, although its function at the cellular level is not yet clear. It is necessary for the synthesis of collagen, a protein that has many connective functions in the body.
Among the substances and structures that contain collagen are bone, cartilage and the surrounding material, as well as carrier substances and materials of union muscle, skin and other tissues. It also requires (AA) for the synthesis of hormones, neurotransmitters and in the metabolism of certain amino acids and vitamins. Participate in the liver for detoxification of toxic substances and blood level for immunity. As an antioxidant reacts with histamine and peroxide for reducing inflammatory symptoms. Its antioxidant capacity is associated with reduced incidence of cancer. 1.1. 1747. - Lind cured scurvy in British sailors with oranges and lemons. 1907. - It is reproduced experimental scurvy in guinea pigs. 2. 2.1. 2.2. Vitamin C: Intravenous Use by Complementary and Alternative Medicine Practitioners and Adverse Effects.
Background Anecdotal information and case reports suggest that intravenously administered vitamin C is used by Complementary and Alternate Medicine (CAM) practitioners. The scale of such use in the U.S. and associated side effects are unknown. Methods and Findings We surveyed attendees at annual CAM Conferences in 2006 and 2008, and determined sales of intravenous vitamin C by major U.S. manufacturers/distributors.
We also queried practitioners for side effects, compiled published cases, and analyzed FDA's Adverse Events Database. Of 199 survey respondents (out of 550), 172 practitioners administered IV vitamin C to 11,233 patients in 2006 and 8876 patients in 2008. Conclusions High dose IV vitamin C is in unexpectedly wide use by CAM practitioners. Figures Citation: Padayatty SJ, Sun AY, Chen Q, Espey MG, Drisko J, et al. Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism 2006, Vol. 50, No. 2 - Immune-Enhancing Role of Vitamin C and Zinc and Effect on Clinical Conditions - Abstract. Abstract Vitamin C concentrations in the plasma and leukocytes rapidly decline during infections and stress. Supplementation of vitamin C was found to improve components of the human immune system such as antimicrobial and natural killer cell activities, lymphocyte proliferation, chemotaxis, and delayed-type hypersensitivity. Vitamin C contributes to maintaining the redox integrity of cells and thereby protects them against reactive oxygen species generated during the respiratory burst and in the inflammatory response. Likewise, zinc undernutrition or deficiency was shown to impair cellular mediators of innate immunity such as phagocytosis, natural killer cell activity, and the generation of oxidative burst. Therefore, both nutrients play important roles in immune function and the modulation of host resistance to infectious agents, reducing the risk, severity, and duration of infectious diseases.
