A naturally filtered outdoor swimming pool is taking shape as part of the redevelopment of King's Cross in London.
The project, called Of Soil and Water, is described as the UK's first man-made bathing pond filtered using natural processes. Conceived by Rotterdam studio Ooze Architects and Slovenian artist Marjetica Potrč as both an art installation and a public facility, the pool will be cleaned using wetland flora and submerged plants rather than chemicals or machinery. It is located within the new Lewis Cubitt Park, close to the campus of design school Central Saint Martins, which forms part of the 27-hectare redevelopment of the area behind King's Cross station. "The project is an attempt to capture the dynamicity conveyed by the changes within the area, a moment in time where new possibilities and possible futures arise," said architect Eva Pfannes, who co-founded Ooze with Sylvain Hartenberg. Designs for Elms Bridge over London's River Thames revealed. News: waterfalls, rainbow-coloured latticework and bright red cycle lanes feature among proposals for a new bridge across London's River Thames to rival Thomas Heatherwick's Garden Bridge (+ slideshow).
Designs by 74 international architectural and engineering teams were submitted in response to the competition launched by Wandsworth Council in December, which called for a structure to span the Thames between Nine Elms on the south bank and Pimlico on the north bank. It will occupy a gap between the existing Vauxhall and Chelsea bridges, providing a new transport link for commuters. All 74 anonymous proposals are available to view online on the competition website. Many of the concepts show snaking and spiralling ramps to allow accessible ascent and descent from the bridge. Red bicycle paths modelled to look like a racing track are included in one design, while another features looping sides lit by pink spotlights. Modular buildings specialist ArchiBlox has unveiled its prototype for a compact carbon-positive house, featuring "edible garden walls", a sunroom and an insulating grass roof (+ slideshow).
Described by ArchiBlox as the world's first carbon-positive prefabricated house, the Archi+ Carbon Positive House is designed to produce more energy than its uses – over its lifespan it is expected to offer the same environmental benefits as 6,095 native Australian trees. "Archi+ Carbon Positive Houses will make significant contributions within society by addressing the increasing levels of carbon emissions and the high levels of embodied energy that come with the construction of a standard home," said the company.

Fashion collections by J.W. The Dutch Windwheel is not only a silent wind turbine - it's also an incredible circular apartment building. How cool would it be to tell people you live inside of a wind turbine?
Designed for the port city of Rotterdam, the Dutch Windwheel is a concept for a sustainable landmark that would be able to house 72 apartments within a circular steel and glass frame, while also serving as a silent, motionless wind turbine. In addition to harvesting energy from the wind, the structure would be equipped with facilities to capture rainwater, recycle tap water and also produce biogas from the residents' organic waste.

The cost of a house can be counted in dollars, but the construction and running of a house takes a toll on the environment that's harder to measure.
Increasing numbers of people are looking to minimize both environmental impact and financial outlay by outfitting their homes with sustainable technology, and the resulting boom in sustainable building is driving new levels of architectural innovation. With this in mind, Gizmag highlights ten remarkable sustainable houses. View all The term sustainable is thrown about quite a bit these days, but there's more to it than adding some solar panels to the roof of an inefficient building and calling it a day. True sustainability is made up of many facets, from building materials to the use of renewable energy sources to design that strives for efficiency and harmony with the surrounding environment.
Waste House. High-Flying Algae Airships are Self-Sufficient Airborne Cities. Architect Vincent Callebaut recently unveiled a blue-sky plan for a high-flying fleet of self-sufficient aircraft that are one part zeppelin cities and one part hydrogen-generating floating farms.
Dubbed Hydrogenase, the algae-producing airborne cities are 100% emission-free and are capable of generating hydrogen gas without consuming land needed for crops or forests. Here at Inhabitat we’ve seen our fair share of future-forward airships, but we’ve never seen one that doubles as a hydrogen-producing flying farm! Designed for the South China Sea near Shanghai, Callebaut’s Hydrogenase airships are completely self-sufficient and contain specialized breeds of seaweed that soak up sunlight and CO2 to generate hydrogen.
3D Print Homes International Launches Crowdfunding Campaign to 3D Print Houses for the World’s Homeless. If you are reading this article, the odds are that you have a home to live in, you have a roof to shelter you from the rain, walls to protect you from the cold, and a comfortable bed to sleep in each night.
Unfortunately though, hundreds of millions of people around the world cannot say the same. Instead of looking forward to that weekly paycheck so that they can buy that fancy pair of shoes, video game console, or all-inclusive stay at a luxury resort, these people live day-to-day hoping and praying that they can find food and shelter. We have seen several companies and individuals propose the idea of 3D printing houses. To some extent, this has already been done. In China they have 3D printed parts of buildings that can be put together to form very small houses. Ultra-green complex in Cairo features a host of energy technologies - Images. Istanbul Design Biennial 2014: buildings of the future won't have walls and will instead consist of climate-controlled areas of landscape according to Sean Lally, one of the contributing designers at the Istanbul Design Biennial 2014 (+ slideshow). Chicago-based Sean Lally leads a team of architects, landscape architects, engineers and researchers, known as Weathers, who are investigating how different forms of energy can be harnessed to create a type of sustainable architecture. New Energy Landscapes, the project Lally is presenting at the biennial, proposes a future scenario where energy and heating don't fill a building envelope, but instead become the envelope.
