What is epiretinal membrane?

Facebook Twitter

Epiretinal membrane is a condition that affects the retina of the eye. It occurs when a thin layer of scar tissue forms on the surface of the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye.

This scar tissue can cause distortion or blurring of vision, as well as other visual symptoms such as double vision or seeing straight lines as wavy or crooked.
Epiretinal membrane is also sometimes referred to as macular pucker or cellophane maculopathy. It is a relatively common condition, particularly in older adults, and may develop as a result of natural aging processes or other underlying eye conditions such as retinal detachment or inflammation.
