What is Retinal Detachment Treatment?

Facebook Twitter

A detached retina will not heal on its own and will need medical intervention.

While retina transplantation for the treatment of hereditary retinal disorders has received a lot of attention, retinal detachment may be addressed using one or more of the following procedures:

Photocoagulation (laser) or cryopexy (freezing): Photocoagulation is a laser therapy in which the laser shine creates microscopic burn scars around the retina tear or hole, which heals the tear. Cryopexy is the freezing of the eye's layers, including the retina, by pressing an extremely cold metal probe against its wall, resulting in an adhesive scar that closes the retina.

Pneumatic retinopexy: A minor tear in the retina is treated with this treatment. A small gas bubble is injected into the vitreous gel by the retina expert, which pushes on the top part of your retina and seals the tear.

Vitrectomy: The most successful procedure for big tears or retinal detachment. The vitreous gel is removed by the retina expert and replaced with a gas bubble or oil.

Scleral buckle: The retina specialist sews a silicone band (buckle) around the sclera (the white area of your eye), pushing the sclera towards the tear or detachment until it heals. The band is invisible.
