Hunyadi, John, the White Knight of Wallachia

He was a mighty Catholic warrior who led the forces of the Kingdom of Hungary to halt the advances of the Ottoman Empire into Christendom. A military genius, his entire life was spent in this noble cause. The king of Hungary recognized Hunyadi’s exceptional military abilities while he was still quite young, and wisely made him a trusted advisor and the field commander of his armies. Hunyadi quickly rewarded King Sigismund’s confidence in him by demonstrating his complete mastery of military strategy at the expense of the invading Ottoman army of Ishak Bey, which he defeated in battle at Semendria.

The Ottoman Empire, with a better appreciation of their adversary, put together an even larger and more powerful force to invade Hungary in the year 1442. Hunyadi met them at a place called the Iron Gates with only 15,000 men. Sadly, it was not to be. . © copyright James Fitzhenry 2011. Muslims of the Crusade of Varna. Crusade of Varna. The Crusade of Varna was a string of events in 1443–44 between the Kingdom of Hungary, the Serbian Despotate, the Principality of Wallachia and the Ottoman Empire.

Crusade of Varna

It culminated in a devastating Christian loss at the Battle of Varna on November 10, 1444. Background[edit] In 1428, while the Ottoman Empire was fighting a war with the Republic of Venice, the Ottomans and the Kingdom of Hungary achieved a temporary peace by establishing the Serbian Despotate as a buffer state. After the war ended in 1430,[1][2] the Ottomans returned to their earlier policy of controlling all lands south of the Danube. In 1432, Sultan Murad II began raiding into Transylvania. Meanwhile, Sigismund's successor Albert had died in October 1439, shortly after signing a law to "restore the ancient laws and customs of the realm". The Crusade[edit] Early fighting[edit] On January 1, 1443, Pope Eugene IV published a crusading bull. Arabians - Horse breed, Horse breeding, types and breeds from Equiworld.

Occasionally white body patches are seen. The Arabs range in size from 14.2 to 16 hands. They are sleek, elegant and classy looking. They are characterized by their dished faces, level croups, and their appearance of floating on air. Arabian heads are short, refined, and dished, with a tapered muzzle; large nostrils; very large, wide spaced and low-set eyes; and, small shapely ears set apart. Their bodies are long, and have sloped shoulders with well-defined withers; a short, concave back, with a long, level croup; a deep girth. In temperament, Arabians are intelligent, affectionate, fiery, courageous, gentle, with high self-esteem. The Arabian could be the oldest known pure breed. Arab blood is pure and highly prepotent: it has the capacity to mix with virtually any other breed and effect an improvement in the resulting progeny.

The Ottoman Army under Sultan Murad II defeated the Hungarian and Polish armies commanded by Władysław III of Poland (also King of Hungary) and John Hunyadi. It was the final battle of the Crusade of Varna.[8][9] Background[edit] The Hungarian Kingdom fell into crisis after the death of King Sigismund in 1437. His son-in-law and successor, King Albert, ruled for only two years and died in 1439, leaving his widow Elizabeth with an unborn child, Ladislaus the Posthumous. After failed expeditions in 1440–2 against Belgrade and Transylvania, and the defeats of the "long campaign" of Hunyadi in 1442–3, the Ottoman sultan Murad II signed a ten-year truce with Hungary. Anticipating an Ottoman invasion encouraged by the young and inexperienced new Ottoman sultan, Hungary co-operated with Venice and Pope Eugene IV to organize a new crusader army led by Hunyadi and Władysław III.
