National Geographic Photo Contest 2012 - In Focus Once again, National Geographic is holding its annual photo contest, with the deadline for submissions coming up on November 30. Beginning on September 1, the society started gathering and presenting galleries of submissions, encouraging readers to vote for them as well. National Geographic was kind enough to let me choose among its entries from 2012 for display here on In Focus. Gathered below are 50 images from the three categories of People, Places, and Nature, with captions written by the individual photographers. 10 Abandoned Psych Wards Photographers Love Sneaking Into Abandoned buildings have long held a fascination for me. They imply a mystery (what happened?) and a challenge (can I get inside and see?) as well as a thrilling bit of danger (guard dogs! My Strange Geographies photo essays grew out of my fascination with abandoned things (and expanded from there), and I actually did hit a mental hospital recently -- a few months ago, on an island just off Venice, Italy, of all places. There are many UrbEx photographers out there (the advent of high-quality, relatively cheap digital cameras that can take pictures practically in the dark helped spread the craze), but one of my favorites, and a friend of mine, is Martino Zegwaard, a seemingly fearless Dutchman whose pictures of skin-crawly places are imbued with a strange beauty. The amazing shot above comes from a facility in upstate New York that he simply refers to as "MT." Martino writes: This relatively small psychiatric center is listed as one the most haunted places of the county.

A Father Who Creatively Captures His Kids (20 photos) If there was a prize that could be given out to the most creative father, I'd hope that it was awarded to Jason Lee. A wedding photographer by day, he's used to capturing some of the most important moments in a couple's lives. As a longtime fan of Jason's photos on Flickr however, I think the real magic happens when he turns the camera onto his daughters. Sure, his children are adorably cute in their own right, but that's not what makes his photos so interesting. I was able to get in touch with Jason to ask him a few questions. Q: How did you get into photography? Q: How do you come up with such creative photos of your daughters? Q: How has being on Flickr helped you with your business? Q: Any inspirational stories you'd like to share? Q: Do you have any advice for aspiring photographers? Q: Any quotes you live by? Thanks for the interview, Jason, and for letting us share in your fatherhood experience. Jason Lee's website

Great Gray Owl Picture -- Bird Photo -- National Geographic Photo of the Day April 9, 2014 Photograph by Henrik Nilsson, National Geographic Your Shot A great gray owl sweeps its wing in Yellowstone National Park in this picture from Your Shot member Henrik Nilsson. "The owl was being harassed by a raven," Nilsson says. "If you look closely, you can see part of the nictitating membrane in the owl's left eye." Nilsson, who visits Yellowstone at least once a year, had been driving one morning toward the Lamar Valley to look for wolves when he came across the owl in a small meadow. Nilsson's picture was recently featured in the Your Shot Daily Dozen. This photo was submitted to Your Shot.
