Code Kingdoms Beginning Game Programming with C# About the Course The Beginning Game Programming with C# course is all about learning how to develop video games using the C# programming language. Why use C# instead of C++, Java, ActionScript, or some other programming language you may have heard of? That learning how to program comment is important because this course doesn't assume you have any previous programming experience. Computer programming is really fun in general, and programming games is even better! Course Syllabus Week One: Introduction to the course, the Visual Studio environment, and the Microsoft XNA framework. Week Two: Classes and objects, the core of object-oriented programming (which works great for games!). Week Three: Strings and what we can do with them. Week Four: No new topicsStudent Work: Project Increment 1, Programming Assignment 3 Peer Evaluation Week Five: Mouse and 360 controller input in XNA. Week Six: No new topicsStudent Work: Project Increment 2, Programming Assignment 4 Peer Evaluation Course Format
A 'Sputnik' moment for women in technology (Opinion) As someone who has spent her career helping build one of the largest tech companies in the world, I was in shock. Suddenly an issue I faced repeatedly at work — the lack of women in tech — hit squarely at home. The story may sound familiar: We had one computer at home and in my daughter's words, my son "had conquered it." Today, this same pattern is playing out in homes throughout America. Despite earning the majority of bachelor's degrees, women earn only 12.9% of computer science degrees, according to the Computing Research Association. The fact that women represent such a small portion of the tech workforce shouldn't just be a wake-up call -- it should be a Sputnik moment. If women don't participate in tech, with its massive prominence in our lives and society, we risk losing many of the economic, political and social gains we have made over decades. Related: Molding the next generation of computer scientists Already some large districts have instituted similar proposals.
Crunchzilla Build an Interactive Story App Course Master Your Intents Extra credit in the previous stage involved creating an Activity with a lot of different user input controls (widgets). Take that project (or create a new one if you need to) and practice opening a second Activity when each control is used. Then practice attaching different types of data to the Intent and then retrieve it in the new Activity. You should also leave the Action Bar in this project to see how it can be used to navigate back to the first Activity. Stringization! Now that you know how to use a String resource, refactor every other hard-coded string in the project to use a String resource. For an extra challenge, see if you can refactor the Fun Facts app to use string resources, too.
Username generator This name generator will give you 10 random usernames, ideal for a wide range of games, websites and other purposes. There are no usernames like 'xxLegolasxx' or 'Doomlord2014', for obvious reasons. On the other hand, the usernames are in a style I like, so they might not fit everybody well, but there are some customization options. By clicking one of the radio buttons below the 'get usernames' button, you enable the substitution of either the first or second words of the randomly generated usernames. You can enter whatever you want in the text box next to it, maybe you found a word in the generator you like but you want to see what else would go with it or maybe you want to add a game-related word or even a swear word, it's all up to you. Only the last 6 names are randomly generated by combining 2 words, there are over 254000 different possible combinations. I personally prefer humorous names or clever names, so I tried to make sure as many of those were added.
