How the General Election works
In the UK something amazing happens every five years: we hold a General Election. On this one day every eligible person in the UK can place a vote and be part of electing their local representative to Parliament. Parties and candidates campaign to win votes by visiting constituents door to door, holding debates and publishing manifestos, a bit like a shopping list of what they plan to do if they’re voted in. But how does the election work? The UK is divided into 650 constituencies, each of which is represented by one Member of Parliament.

Lewis W. Hine (American, 1874–1940)
American photographer. Following several years as a factory worker in Oshkosh, and a short period at the University of Chicago, where he studied sociology and pedagogy (1900–01), he went to New York to teach at the Ethical Culture School (1901–8). There he acquired a camera as a teaching tool and soon set up a club and ran classes at the school, while improving his own skills as a self-taught photographer. In 1904 Hine’s interest in social issues led him to document newly arrived immigrants at Ellis Island as a way of demonstrating their common humanity, for example Young Russian Jewess at Ellis Island (1905; see Rosenblum, Rosenblum and Trachtenberg, p. 43). Thereafter he sought to demonstrate the efficacy of the photograph as a truthful witness, accepting commissions from social-work agencies. Loin de l'antagonisme que semble pourtant évoquer le couple graffiti / écologie, certains artistes nous prouvent désormais qu'il est possible de s'inscrire dans le territoire urbain en ne laissant qu'une empreinte négligeable sur le plan environnemental. Le graffiti fait partie de ces pratiques dont on se doit de dire qu'elles induisent une trace écologique relativement lourde, s'agissant concrètement d'appliquer, sur mur, de la peinture alliant divers composants excessivement toxiques, contenus dans un outil, la bombe aérosol, peu recyclable, et portant par essence déjà lui-même atteinte à l'environnement. Born in 1860 in St Croix, then the Danish West Indies, Jackson was a boxing champion who spent long periods of time touring Europe. In England, he staged the famous fight against Jem Smith at the Pelican Club in 1889. In 1888 he claimed the title of Australian heavyweight champion.
