Of Mice and Men – useful quotations Dicas de Pronúncia *Todo o áudio dessa dica está aqui: * Hi, everyone! Ouça o jeito incorreto novamente: [2] problEm, famIly, Above E agora o correto: [3] problem, family, above Deu pra perceber a diferença entre as duas versões?

May 2012 extract resource The sounds of English and the International Phonetic Alphabet © Tomasz P. Szynalski, Antimoon.com This chart contains all the sounds (phonemes) used in the English language. For each sound, it gives: The symbol from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), as used in phonetic transcriptions in modern dictionaries for English learners — that is, in A. To print the chart, use the printable PDF version. Does this chart list all the sounds that you can hear in British and American English? No. For example, this page does not list the regular t (heard in this pronunciation of letter) and the flap t (heard in this one) with separate symbols. So this page actually lists phonemes (groups of sounds), not individual sounds. Take the phoneme p in the above chart. Typing the phonetic symbols You won’t find phonetic symbols on your computer’s keyboard. You can use my free IPA phonetic keyboard at ipa.typeit.org. You can also use the ASCII Phonetic Alphabet, which represents IPA symbols with “normal” characters that you can type on your keyboard.

Ageing China: Changes and challenges China's fertility rate - the average number of children a woman has in their lifetime - is 1.6, which is lower than the rate in the UK and the US. The Chinese government believes the one-child policy curtailed population growth, and that it prevented 400 million extra births. The BBC asked Cai Yong, a population expert at the University of North Carolina, to estimate what the country's population growth would have been without the one-child policy. His findings suggest that China's fertility would have declined at a similar rate without the one-child policy and would continue to decline even if the policy was discarded. How did the one-child policy affect population levels? Cai Yong writes: The UN's Population Division and statisticians from the University of Washington developed a set of sophisticated models to predict a country's future fertility based on its fertility change history and fertility trends in all other countries.

A new plan allowing couples in China to have two children if one of the parents is an only child is continuing to reverberate through the media since its announcement on Friday. The measures are part of the resolutions released after the ruling Communist Party Central Committee's third plenum in Beijing last week. The one-child policy was enforced in the late 1970s to bring down a rapidly-growing population. The policy was later ease to allow couples to have two children if they were both without siblings. "This is a positive measure that will not only deal with the demographic dividend decline, labour shortages and other issues, but also help to build a strong social security and pension system," says the Beijing Times.
