This site was started in February, 2002 and has grown larger than I would ever have thought possible. To make things move a little smoother, this site is now going to be driven directly from a database. Another change is that instead of listing the ranges for each of the author pages and issue pages, only a link to the first respective page will be supplied on this main page. In the future I plan to add a search page and some statistics pages showing the most popular downloads for the week, month, and since the site began. Il restera dans l'histoire de la culture numérique comme le fondateur du « projet Gutenberg », un projet coopératif majeur datant des débuts de l'internet et ayant réussi à créer un gigantesque fonds de livres numérisés offerts en partage. Il y a quarante ans, en juillet 1971, le jeune Michael Hart reçoit son sésame pour utiliser, en temps partagé, l'ordinateur Xerox de l'Université d'Illinois à Urbana-Champain. Peu versé sur le calcul, il se demande ce qu'il pourrait bien faire d'utile à la société à partir d'un tel outil, limité, n'utilisant qu'un jeu de caractères en capitales, et très lent en regard des ordinateurs d'aujourd'hui. Michael Hart a continué sur sa lancée pour rendre disponible la plus grande quantité de livres possible. Longtemps son credo fut celui du « plain vanilla ascii », c'est à dire de refuser toute mise en page afin que les textes soient accessibles à toutes les machines, par tous les utilisateurs.

Website where anyone can access free online audio and print ebooks. Volunteers have given their time to record and put together content from books that fall in the public domain. Very helpful for accessing classic literature for free. Would recommend for students in late junior high through high school.
Recommendations:
1. Use the audio books for a read aloud in class.
2. Students can read chapters of classic literature on their own and then collaborate with their classmates to put together projects based from the books.
3. Teachers can have students record themselves reading chapters of a particular book from the site similar to how volunteers record themselves reading a particular text. Afterward, the student can talk about what they learned from reading and rereading the text.
