How Are Email, Facebook and Twitter Audiences Different? With marketers engaging with consumers across multiple channels, messages must be tailored to resonate with audiences on email and social sites. But research suggests a look at simple demographics does not give a clear indication of how audiences differ; engagement in these channels is personal and depends more on psychographic characteristics. According to ExactTarget’s “Subscribers, Fans and Followers” report, there is little cannibalization among the three channels—instead, there is significant overlap. Most internet users studied in April 2010 engaged with brands only via marketing emails, but nearly a third subscribed to emails in addition to being fans of brands on Facebook. The vast majority of social media fans or followers were also email subscribers. Overall, 94% of daily email users subscribed to marketing messages. Users also engage with a greater number of brands via email. But analyzed psychographically, ExactTarget found different patterns of engagement.

Create RSS feed from any web page using Yahoo Pipes | Reaper-X In this post, i’m going to write a simple explanation / basic example about using Yahoo Pipes to fetch a webpage (you are free to use any pages you want assuming they allow Yahoo Pipes) and then create a RSS Feed from it so you can read it on your favorite rss reader As an example, in this post i’m going to give an example of creating RSS Feed from HorribleSubs website (horriblesubs.org) that i’ve been using (for myself only) so i can keep track on their Gintama release easily (i read that they’re planning on doing a total makeover of their site so i guess it’s okay to use them as an example) Before anything else, please see the source of the pipe used in this example (you need to log in to Yahoo first) because you’ll need to be logged in to Yahoo to see or create a new pipe Update 1: Here’s the updated version of the pipe which is used for their new domain (horriblesubs.info) and their new site design. 1. and here is what it looks like on the Yahoo Pipes side 2. 3. and here’s the output

How to Revise an Email So That People Will Read It - David Silverman - HarvardBusiness.org by David Silverman | 4:35 PM April 14, 2009 “People think that the first draft is the big event and that revision is cleaning up afterward. But the first draft is really setting up the chairs, tables, and cups, and revision isn’t cleaning up after the party, it is the party.” “All first drafts are terrible. I don’t care if you’re Hemingway.” “What comes out unfiltered from anyone’s mind is mud.” The first two quotations come from writing professors whose names I’ve since forgotten (and they were quoting other people whom they’d forgotten). I’ve found that for your average email, the number of revisions largely depends on the number of recipients. 1 to 5 recipients = 2 to 4 revisions 5 to 10 recipients = 8 to 12 revisions Company-wide or to Executive Committee = 30 to 50 revisions Even the simplest missive to one person benefits from a couple of extra passes, and if it’s going to the management committee, expect everyone to have changes (and changes to those changes). 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Hot or Not: E-mail Marketing vs. Social-Media Marketing - The Steve Rubel Stream The Clip Report: An eBook on the Future of Media In the early 1990s when I began my career in PR there were clip reports. These were physical books that contained press clips. It seems downright archaic now but that’s how I learned about the press - by cutting, pasting up and photocopying clippings. My fascination with the media never abated. Today my role is to form insights into how the entire overlapped media landscape - the pros, social channels, and corporate content - is rapidly evolving and to help Edelman clients turn these learnings into actionable strategies. Today I am re-launching my Tumblr site with a new name, a new focus and a new format. It all kicks off today with a 15-page installment of The Clip Report.

The Elements of Retro Web Design The vintage and retro style is becoming more and more popular in today’s digital artwork. The use of retro and vintage themes in design is probably one of the most pervasive trends since the industry went almost completely digital. In today’s post, we’ll look at examples of work sourced from the wonderful Dribbble, which helps us focus on snippets of a piece, rather than the entire design or illustration. From here, it’s possible to identify what techniques have been used and to describe how they impact the overall design. You will become familiar with these design trends and be able to replicate them. To help you, short tutorials are scattered throughout the article. 1. Simple shapes are commonly used in vintage design. p This lovely illustration makes use of elliptical shapes to produce a sun and is finished off nicely with a typographic effect. Circlebox Creative’s branding is based on a circle and inspired by vintage ink stamps and badges. Mini-Tutorials And we’re done! 2. Color Resources

Feed Creator · FiveFilters.org Say NO to squeezing your buyers The debate about gating valuable content (such as ebooks, white papers, research reports and the like) behind a registration requirement comes up again and again. To squeeze or not to squeeze: The options 1. 2. This really is a bit like debating religion or politics – each side believes strongly in their position and many are eager to argue passionately for their side. For more on the debate, check out the excellent piece from Ann Handley in American Express Open Forum Should You Put Your eBooks and White Papers (and Other Content) Behind a Registration Page? While I don't actively seek converts to my religion, I do want people to understand both sides. First was Susan Gunelius who wrote in Remove the Gateway and Let Your Content Spread Across the Web that my make it free approach "really stuck with me and made me think in a new direction." Say NO to squeezing your buyers - Requiring registration GREATLY reduces the number of people who download something. It really comes down to goals.
