What now looks like the perfect home was once a textile mill. For those in disbelief, the ceilings can give you clues. There are absolutely no inklings of the remnants of an industrial area here but that is the beauty of the place. The house is lively and everything that has been included just adds to its charm! If you come across stunning villas like these which you think need to be featured here at Home-Designing, please mention them in the comments. Alastair Heseltine Design some people are just born with it « style/SWOON this house was love at first foot in the door… Jamie Laubhan-Oliver and her husband Larry Oliver are two of the most talented people I’ve ever known. Jamie is an art director for DHome/DWeddings and Larry is a senior designer for Neiman Marcus. They are both art directors and spend much of their days orchestrating amazing photoshoots. Their impeccable taste and blessed sample sale opportunities have turned their somewhat modest city townhome into a luxurious style haven. Each detail of their home is so interesting: from the alligator skull, to the collection of keys from Jamie’s father mixed with the heap of wine corks, and an armless baby doll. Each one has a story. Don’t get me wrong…these two have got their fair share of Jonathan Adler and other notable fancies by their ability to mix it all up so well is a gift. I have to tell you that one of the other endearing qualities about this couple is their peculiar side. Thank you Jamie and Larry!! photography by Elizabeth Lavin
Less is the New More: Making the Most of Small Spaces Good Design For Living in Small ApartmentsAs people migrate to smaller spaces, good design helps a lot. This is something they figured out in Europe long ago, that if you don't have a lot of horizontal room you can go vertical. Tumidei in Italy makes some of the nicest stuff, like this unit with lots of storage under the bed. This unit just raises the floor high enough for beds to slide under. This one looks a bit clinical, but has two single beds plus a pull-out double bed in between. When you read in the New York Times that professional couples with children are moving into small one-bedroom apartments in Manhattan and sleeping in closets, perhaps this stuff could be useful. None of this stuff is cheap, nor, as far as I can tell is it available in North America, but there are ideas here that demonstrate how people can share a space and still get a little privacy, a good place to work and a lot of storage in a very small envelope. Bathroom My Monday morning has officially been made, thanks to interior designers Nicole Maier and Crys Olig, the principals of Threshold Goods & Design based out of San Francisco and Boston, as well as the kitchen, bar and bathroom designer Jessica Snyder Betts at Roomscapes Luxury Design Center! I'm just loving how bright and crisp this Bedford, Massachusetts home is, with loads of texture, pops of perfectly placed color and comfy areas that beg for relaxing! The peacock-blue grasscloth wallcovering and the great built-in hutch are especially fabulous! Love turquoise?
Animated stereoviews of old Japan ::: Pink Tentacle 28 Oct 2009 In the late 19th and early 20th century, enigmatic photographer T. Enami (1859-1929) captured a number of 3D stereoviews depicting life in Meiji-period Japan. [Sumo wrestlers] A stereoview consists of a pair of nearly identical images that appear three-dimensional when viewed through a stereoscope, because each eye sees a slightly different image. This summer we decided to build some additional housing and the images here show you what we came up with. V-houses at V-erana. An experiment which turned out to be exciting to design, to build and after all to live in. The idea to build those ‘outlooks’ came from Jo Scheer who had build his ‘hoochs’ in Puerto Rico and Oregon. He used mainly Bamboo or Douglas fir poles; we decided to use metal instead. With 16’ off the ground they also created an instant spectacular view where there normally wouldn’t be one. For privacy reasons we spaced all ‘rooms’ about 18’ apart. And, once we had figured out how to build the first one, all others were just a repetition. The houses are self contained. Go here if you are interested in some construction images or send us an email if you would like more details about the project. 2008 Jan 31 6 responses. share this Back to articles
