Steampunk Insects Created from Bullets Tom Hardwidge’s Arthrobots are robotic insects — steampunk creations made from upcycled gears, nuts, bolts… and bullets! All images courtesy of Tom Hardwidge . English artist Tom Hardwidge has an unusual specialty: creating steampunk insects from old, inactive ammunition and pieces of clockwork. Each piece is so delicately and masterfully crafted that it is sometimes hard to even imagine what the recycled components might once have been, or to decipher where one part ends and where the next begins. Even harder to believe is that Hardwidge creates steampunk insects only as a hobby; he is a digital designer by day and gets time to work as a creative insect maker only at night. Apart from old bullets, discarded pocket watch parts make up the bulk of his little insects. Most of the pieces are supplied by local company, The Watch Lab, who sift through their rubbish bins to find parts for Hardwidge. This golden grasshopper ( Roborthoptera aurum duo ) has long legs, curly antennae and no wings.
With Maidens of Mystery - The artwork of Audrey Kawasaki | culturazzi Audrey Kawasaki is a Los Angeles-based painter, known for her characteristic works that are painted directly onto wood panels. Kawasaki studied fine art painting at the Pratt Institute in New York City, but left after two years without completing her degree. The emphasis that New York art standards put on conceptual art was at odds with her painting ideologies and was the reason for her leaving. The unique style that she renders to her artworks can be described as a fusion of eastern as well as western traditions such as Art Nouveau and Japanese Manga comics. Audrey’s paintings are portrayals of young, mesmerizing women who come across as innocent and tantalizing at once. Audrey’s command of her unique and precise illustrative style has made her works wildly popular today and has found her an esteemed place in the art gallery scene across the world.

October Inspirations Lately, my bucket has been brimming over with ideas. I love Pinterest not just to discover cute and clever art lessons, but for ideas to create them. I’m in the business of creating my own content so I look to my surroundings (and Pinterest!) for my daily fix. Here’s what’s inspiring me lately… A simple image often spurs the brain into action. I’m always on the lookout for a simple approach to teach perspective and this atmospheric grove of birch trees is perfect. Last summer, I took my parents to visit Lotusland in Santa Barbara. Of course, inspiration is never far away. What has inspired you lately? 3D Paintings on Panes of Glass Using multiple layers of clear glass, Canada based David Spriggs and Chinese born Xia Xiaowan, transform flat artwork into 3D sculptures. Viewers are treated to different shifting perspectives of the works based on where they stand in the art space. Spriggs work revolves around powerful explosive imagery, often resembling storms, cosmic blasts or firework like explosions. Xiawan’s “spatial paintings,” which often feature distorted figures, are drawn individually using colored pencil on tinted glass. Only when these pieces are combined on their floor racks do the images create the whole hologram like effect.
