Quality Matters Program | Ruth Clark Claims “Games Don’t Teach” Ruth Clark posted at ASTD an article titled “Why Games Don’t Teach.” It’s a deliberately provocative title, meant to draw attention and cause controversy. A more accurate title would be “Some Games Aren’t Effective at Making People Remember Content,” but that’s a lot less likely to grab attention. Before I continue, I want to say that I enjoyed her book, eLearning and the Science of Instruction, and I have found some of the research there valuable. I respect her past contributions to the field. However, I think Clark didn’t do a very careful review of the literature before writing her post, and I don’t think that one study is enough for her to make such a broad claim dismissing games for learning. According to Ruth Clark, you didn’t learn anything playing Oregon Trail, Carmen Sandiego or Lemonade Stand Let’s look at her summary of the research: The goal of the research was to compare learning efficiency and effectiveness from a narrative game to a slide presentation of the content.

Top 5 CRM Tools for Freelancers and Small Businesses When you have just a few clients, it’s easy to keep track of them in an Excel document. But as your business grows, it becomes harder to track your communication, sales efforts and project progress. That’s where Customer Relationship Management (let’s call it CRM from here on) tools come into play. Even if you consider yourself a small business, you can benefit from these tools — and it doesn’t have to cost you a fortune (in fact, 3 of them have a free plan). Almost all of these offer mobile apps and Outlook integration, so consider that covered. The leader: SalesForce Let’s start by looking at the company that indisputably changed the CRM market, SalesForce. The “Contact Manager” is their entry plan, and offers some pretty decent CRM features. For each contact on your list, you can enter basic information, schedule tasks, view contact history and browse attachments. You can also keep track of sales opportunities for each contact.

7 reasons why the new Articulate Storyline is a Game-Changer for eLearning First, let me start by congratulating everyone who works for Articulate for the launch of Storyline. Undertaking a monumental job such as writing an application like Storyline from the ground up is no easy feat. However if there’s a company that can do it, that is certainly Articulate. I have been a fan of Articulate for a long time even as I worked for Adobe on the Captivate and eLearning Suite products. The day after leaving Adobe, I had my first meeting with Arlyn Asch, Articulate CTO, who spent time with me going over Storyline and after an hour of talking to Arlyn and seeing what they were working on, it was a enough for me to believe that sure enough Storyline was going to be a game-changer. So here it goes, these are the things that have impressed me about Storyline, some are features but I also consider the intangibles, such as Articulate’s community, to be important factors too, which is why I put the Articulate Community at the top of the list. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Transforming Your Instructional Design Team by Dick Handshaw "If you are using a good instructional design methodology, you will be able to accurately measure learner success with skills that really apply to the job, especially if you have done a good task analysis and written performance objectives to match." I’m not assuming that all instructional design teams need transforming, but I have worked with many teams over the years that have made a conscious decision to change. The best way to determine if your team needs to make changes is to conduct your own gap analysis. Gap analysis First, create a vision of what you want your results to look like. We see a variety of performance gaps described by our clients. New practices step-by-step Here are three steps to help you adopt new practices for your team: The first step is the easiest – skill development. Now that your team has improved their skills, you have committed leadership, and all team members are aligned around a process that everyone believes in, it’s time to approach your clients.

e-Learning Storyboard: Art or Science? Christmas is fast approaching and I’ve been asked again this year to write a guest blog article for the E-Learning Network’s advent calendar of e-learning insights, advice and stories. I’m not sure what to write about this year but I thought I’d share my contribution from last year on ‘Storyboarding’. There’s a free storyboard template in it for you if you manage to get to the end! The storyboard is the vehicle by which conventional e-learning gets done, but the storyboard is a much misunderstood thing both by those in the e-learning business and by customers. The problem is that everyone does storyboarding in a different way. One of the problems with the storyboard is that it has to perform so many functions throughout an e-learning development project. It acts as the scoping vehicle (have we included everything?) Clearly this is a big ask for one document. So we recognise that the storyboard has to achieve a lot so how should it look to achieve this massive task? The Visual Storyboard
