bodies-in-motion 30 second sequences from BiM Not long ago, I had twelve artists from Natural Motion (of Morpheme and Clumsy Ninja fame) into Somerset House, my home away from home, for a four day anatomy workshop. At the end of each day we would take about 20 minutes to draw from the Bodies in Motion library. sketching from BiM We made extensive use of the timer for gesture drawing. It can be set to 10fps, 1fps, 30sec, 1min, 2min, or 5mins, and ticks down to zero before flipping to the next frame of the motion sequence. timelapse of a sequence of 30 second poses

Simplify Human Anatomy guide by STARTSEITE - AMAZON-WARRIORS - STARTSEITE Artistic Anatomy Is learning to draw anatomy in a classroom more secure (since there is a teacher to check the work and possibly a book to study from) in practicing artistic anatomy drawing, or should artists focus on just practicing from images on websites/blogs like this tumblr? Asketh - pjmx24 Depending on the size of your class and where you are, your teacher can be a great guide to help you and show you what areas you need to focus on more to improve and give you good material to work from! If your class size is too big (ideally a class of no more than 15 is optimal for a teacher to give extensive feedback to all students) you might not get enough feedback to really improve as much as possible to your full potential. Outside of class (or if you have no class) you should focus on drawing in a sketchbook dedicated for life drawing/anatomy. Even a page a week of studying will help you improve. Hope that gives you some insight!

Referencing from Photos 101: Figure reference « Wicked Fae It’s an inescapable fact, if you want to be an artist you have to observe real things. Whether you’re painting fantasy figures, classical studies, still life, or architecture, you need to have a good solid understanding of how things actually look. Most people, when they first begin to draw, use symbols to represent the things they know, not the things they actually see: a curved line is a mouth, a pair of circles are eyes, a ball with five sticks of varying lengths attached is a hand. Sadly, most of us cannot afford to have scantily clad models drop by every day so we can practice drawing humans; and for some, life drawing classes either don’t come soon enough, or aren’t affordable. Stock images There are couple of problems inherit in using photos and the Internet as your reference morgue file. If you’re poor and would rather go the free route, there are some free stock photo sites out there as well. Seeing Isn’t Always Believing Analyzing a Photo for Reference Click to enlarge images
