How to Make Plastic Yarn (Continuous / Single-Strand Strip Cutting Method) Tip: Any of the strip methods can also be used with fabric; t-shirts, etc.. Tutorial for cutting a Continuous (Single-Strand) Strip:Lay the bag out flat, straightening out the straps. Fold bag in half (folding bottom up to be even with the top) matching up the handles then a couple more times for easier cutting. Cut straps off right at the base of the straps and cut off bottom seam of bag. Just a sliver is all that is needed. Put your hand through the middle of the bag to pull it apart and lay flat as a tube. Continue the fold multiple times until your tube is small enough to make one cut. Straighten out the strips – it almost looks like tentacles. Whether you lay it out on a flat surface or use your arm - to begin cutting place your scissors on the bottom half of the spine, angle your scissors in an upward motion to the next section over and cut. Making the Ball –The easiest way I have found to make a ball is put your pointer and middle fingers together.

The Thumb Trick: Sometimes called an afterthought thumb, I first read about it in Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitter's Almanac. I really like this method because it's seamless; sometimes when patterns have you place stitches on a holder and then cast on the top stitches you can get an odd seam right in the crease where your thumb meets the hand, and that can be uncomfortable. The only trouble that some people may have with this method is that you cannot immediately try on your mitten in progress, as you can with mittens where the stitches are put on holders. But if you want to you can just knit a few more rows and then pick up the stitches instead of waiting until the mitten is done, threading the waste yarn through them so you can try on your mittens as you knit. The trick: Knit to where you want to place the thumb hole, and take a length of contrasting yarn, and knit the thumbhole stitches with it instead of your working yarn: (see the working yarn, still on the right-hand side of the work?) Soft Cotton Knit Dishtowels There's something so beautiful about a soft, well-used vintage dishtowel. I often find myself marveling at all of their wonderful neutral shades. Some are a warm cream, others have honey tones and some stone grey. I especially love their red details and stripes which range from bright tomato red to rich red wine. My vintage towels were the inspiration for these Soft Cotton Knit Dishtowels which make drying the dishes feel like a luxurious treat. Knit hat I used 4 1/2 mm needles. Cast on 100 stitches for an adult, If you want it smaller cast on less stitches. Pattern Row 1: knit Row 2: purl Row 3: K1, P1 Row 4: purl Repeat these 4 rows until it measures 8", I did till it measured 11" end with the Purl row. Once it measures 8" or 11" Next row: K1, K2 together, end with K1 Next row: purl Repeat these two rows one more time. Cut the yarn 15" or 20" long and weave it through the last stitches. Pull it together and sew the top and sides from the wrong side of the hat. This hat makes it own roll up brim. The pattern is adapted from here. But if you’re lucky enough to have one, it sure is nice. Just imagine making little style changes and fitting improvements on a 3-D version of yourself. Here’s why a dress form is great and how you can make one, with a little help. Minor pattern adjustments become easy and obvious when you’re looking at the actual problem in fabric on “yourself.” The shape of your shoulders, the position and angle of your neck and the unique distribution of your body weight are issues far more important than questions of circumference, since most clothes hang from the shoulders or the waist, and don’t fit snugly. The best feature of the do-it-yourself, duct tape form described here is that it’s so quick to make you can have a working form ready in less than two hours. Free Knitting Patterns | Free Vintage Knitting Patterns Basic Party Wrap Time to Party: This cute little fuzzy wrap makes me think of holiday parties and other celebrations. It's a super-easy project that gives you lots of practice increasing and decreasing. Materials: Two skeins of fuzzy, medium-weight yarn, or about 300 yards (I used Yarn Bee Decadence, which was available at Hobby Lobby but has been discontinued) Size seven straight needles Crochet hook or sewing needle This pattern makes a wrap that is about 14 inches wide and 52 inches long. Instructions: Cast on three stitches. Finishing: When you get down to three stitches, bind off and weave in the ends. A great way to wear this project is draped over your shoulders and held in place with a pretty pin.
How to Make a Sturdy Felt Button I told you about necessity being the mother of invention, but I neglected to mention that poverty is the mother of necessity. Perhaps, unlike me, you have the means to buy whatever buttons you want whenever you want. If you do, these are sooooo cool that you may want to make them anyway. Trace a circle on a piece of hard plastic. Cut out the circle and use a seam ripper to poke two holes in it. Sew heavy cotton thread through the holes. Make a bobble with wool. CO 1 st. To give a rounded, rose-like finish, you can crochet a chain and sew it on to the bobble in a spiral. (You can also add this or other embellishments after felting.) Now throw them in the washing machine. Turn the washer to hot wash - cold rinse for the smallest load possible. Put the buttons in a bag and zip or tie shut. One wash did the felting for me. Felted buttons: I used the cotton thread to sew the button to a bag.
