Search Results history hunt » Anne Fox Basic assumptions Earlier in the year I was speculating about how to implement a mobile exercise using one of the many augmented reality apps that have appeared in the last couple of years. Before I could implement I wanted a smartphone so that I could experiment and this finally happened in June. Experimental group The next challenge was to find a group to experiment with. When I finally approached the school I was incredibly lucky because it just so happened that they were facing a challenge which my suggestion could help. The activity Research: So my proposal was that the younger pupils could find out more about the history of our small village by going out and noticing buildings and so on, by making use of the local history archive which is partly on the web and partly in a building housed by willing volunteers who would be prepared to find photos and other documents for the children as well as in classroom sessions. Construct-a-Word Construct-a-Word provides a simple, engaging way for students to generate dozens of different words by first choosing an ending (for example -an, -ed, -at, -op) and then adding a beginning letter or blend. When a correct word is created, the word is stored in a Word Bank where students can read and review their words. For each ending, Construct-a-Word prompts students to create between 6 and 14 different possible words, adding an element of fun and discovery. It uses animation and sound to guide students through the steps of creating words, and employs prompts that are clear and easy to master. This interactive tool could be used individually or in small groups, either in one session or across multiple lessons. For ideas of how to use this tool outside the classroom, see Construct-a-Word in the Parent & Afterschool Resources section. Access More Than 1,000 Socrative Quizzes Sorted by Subject One of the nice administrative aspects of Socrative is the ability to share quizzes with colleagues and import quizzes that are shared with you. This morning on the Socrative Facebook page I found their massive spreadsheet of more than 1,000 shared quizzes. The spreadsheet is arranged by subject and grade level. You can find a quiz by opening the filter menu and selecting a subject. Socrative is accepting submissions for more quizzes to be added to their spreadsheet. To create a copy of the Socrative quizzes spreadsheet, sign into your Google account and select "make copy" from the file menu while viewing the spreadsheet. New Kickstarter 'World of Classcraft' Lets Students Unlock Real-World Powers Video games in the classroom are becoming a popular way to integrate game-based learning into curricula. But Shawn Young of Sherbrooke, Canada has taken it one step further and actually built his own education version of World of Warcraft. He put his own spin on the extremely popular Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) and dubbed it ‘ World of Classcraft .’ Shawn emailed Edudemic to alert us to this idea and we’re glad he did. If You’ve Never Heard of World of Warcraft So what is World of Warcraft? What Is World of Classcraft? Lucky for you, Shawn is running a Kickstarter campaign right now and describes the game in a bit more detail than I could: World of Classcraft is a multiplayer, in-school, role-playing game I invented it with my students. The basic mechanics of the game are simple. See Also: 10 Ways Teachers Are Using MMORPGs In The Classroom During every class, a random event occurs. Playing the game can be pretty complex in a class setting.
