Earlier this month, the administration said it was backing peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Speaking at a NATO summit in Brussels, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the US supports Afghan reconciliation. DEFENSE SECRETARY ROBERT GATES: We’ve always acknowledged that reconciliation has to be a part of the solution, ultimately, in Afghanistan, and we will do whatever we can to support that process. JUAN GONZALEZ: A few days later, the New York Times reported that US-led forces allowed senior Taliban leaders to enter Afghanistan for meetings with Afghan leaders in Kabul. A US military judge dismissed the argument Friday that Guantanamo’s youngest prisoner, Omar Khadr, was a child soldier when captured in Afghanistan and therefore in need of protection and not prosecution. US Army Colonel Peter Brownback’s ruling clears the way for Omar Khadr’s trial, which will be the first war crimes trial in history of anyone under the age of eighteen. The Toronto-born twenty-one-year-old, now, was fifteen when he was shot and captured after a fight with US Special Forces in Afghanistan. Michelle Shephard is the national security reporter for the Toronto Star. Thanks very much for joining us, Michelle. Omar Khadr is the second-youngest son of an Egyptian Canadian named Ahmed Said Khadr, who came to Canada, studied here and, during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, went as a charity worker. Omar and his siblings grew up between Canada, Pakistan and Afghanistan, shuttled back and forth. Right.
