Camera Hacks: Turn Your Point-and-Shoot into a Super-Camera

How-To: Expand your camera with CHDK As anyone who has lusted over the technical specifications for Canon’s new Digital Rebel XSi knows, the capabilities of the average point and shoot camera are severely limited. Using the CHDK firmware hack, the features of Canon point and shoot cameras can be significantly expanded, allowing for ultra-high speed photography, very long exposures, time lapse photography, and RAW capture. This How-To provides a guide to our experiences using the CHDK firmware, and shows just how easy it is to get more out of a point and shoot than ever thought possible. Installing CHDK The first step is to install the CHDK software. After installing, you’ll want to have the firmware autoload when you boot up your camera. Taking long exposures Long exposure photography is appreciated for its soft, sometimes surreal images of (usually) night scenes. Navigate to CHDK’s main menu and find Extra Photo Operations. Though the camera will not indicate the modified shutter speed, the changes will take place. next x

Photography and post-processing tutorials from beginner to advanced | Phototuts+ Beginners photography - capturing moving water Capturing Moving Water in Photography By Rivers, waterfalls and gently babbling streams are soothing even in photographs. We are automatically drawn to the contrast of blue and white waters passing through brilliant green landscapes, gentle fields of yellowing grass, or tumbling through grey and green moss covered boulders and rocks. How do you capture water in motion? Beginners Photography - Photorealistic Images: If you permit the automatic settings in your camera to record the moving water, chances are it will opt to utilize a fast shutter speed to eliminate blur. While this gives an accurate depiction of the moving water, it may not create the tone or texture that is desired. Beginners Photography - Smooth Water: By adjusting camera settings manually the appearance of moving water can be made smooth and almost “soft”. This may require reliance on a tripod to prevent hand shake and blurriness, but the result will be dramatically different than from an automatic settings.
