Developers in the core R&D group — with titles like “lead creative technologist” and, my favorite, “futurist-in-residence” — are charged by the brass 14 floors below them with anticipating how news will next be consumed. Among their hunches: in the living room. Josh and I visited the R&D group last week, and this week we’ll be running five videos showing how they’re looking at the future of news. You’ll notice there’s a marketing or advertising component to nearly all of what the group is working on. They drink better coffee in the R&D group, not the burnt stuff chugged by reporters on deadline. You’ll find the details of what Bilton and his colleagues are thinking about in each of the five videos, and I’ll address some of their key ideas as the week progresses.

Jamais vous n’oublierez ce que vous faisiez ce soir-là, au moment où les attentats ont frappé Paris. Sur une idée de Catherine Galloway, qui enseigne à l’Ecole de journalisme de Sciences Po, nous avons posé la question à nos confrères journalistes, français ou étrangers. Vendredi 13 novembre, je sortais d’un bar vers Parmentier à 21h30 et je m’apprêtais à rentrer chez moi rue de Marseille, dans le 10e arrondissement de Paris. Je crois que j’ai alors regardé Twitter: j’y ai vu les toutes premières infos sur “une fusillade au Petit Cambodge”. Là, je me suis arrêtée et j’ai appelé la radio pour leur dire que j’étais là. J’y suis restée jusque vers 2 heures du matin, à faire des directs au téléphone et à envoyer les témoignages recueillis à l’iPhone par email, quand la police a compris que je n’étais ni victime ni témoin et qu’ils m’ont sorties du périmètre.
