Recycling Billboards into Modern Residential Buildings

Recycling Billboards into Modern Residential Buildings
As more and more advertising goes online and transportation conservation becomes an increasing economic and ecological concern, what is the future fate of the infamous billboard? One proposal by Front Architects suggests turning these into lofted homes – small houses to be sure, but located in some potentially fascinating places. Some of these unusually thin homes could be built in place from scratch, others could be transported to new locations or even left where they are in the urban environment. As with so many good design projects the feasibility of this specific idea as such is not of singular or even primary importance – the concept provides a foundation for rethinking everyday urban structures, artifacts of the built environment, that we might find new and different uses for as times change. Alas, the above image is only a computer-generated overlay in a real situation. Still, what would it be like to live in somewhere so public yet also removed from the street level?

Data Visualization Architect For the beta release of Axiis I prepared a visualization showing the historical browser breakdown of visitors to W3schools.com. I wouldn’t consider it a useful data visualization by any stretch of the imagination (pie charts are not a great idea, and concentric pie charts… oh my!), but it does demonstrate how easy it is to get started with Axiis and build something complex in a few lines of mark-up. Since the beta release I added the ability to filter by browser type, and Tom lent his artistic eye and did a little restyling. Although the number of Axiis tutorials out there is growing steadily, there are still very few, so I’ll dive deep and explain exactly how this visualization works. Check it out here.

Immersive Cocoon // Step Into The Future Directed & 3D CG by Oliver Zeller, Video Courtesy of I-Cocoon The world of interfaces continues to evolve and surprise us. We still think of it as something we can hold, fold and place in our bag to carry anywhere. What if you can be part of an intuitive and holistic experience where your interface is not reduced to a mouse-click or a two dimensional tablet screen. True Facts Facts - interesting, provocative, well-seasoned One out of ten children in Europe are conceived on an IKEA bed. Antarctica is the only continent without reptiles or snakes. An eagle can kill a young deer and fly away with it.

Green Screen – natural cooling system The same sunlight that gives us warmth in winters feels like a curse in summers. But a single setup that helps warm sun rays enter our room during the winter season doesn’t work when one wishes to block all the sunlight during the summer time. To end such worries, a Green Screen consisting of lower grass and screen has been designed. This method has exploited the natural cooling system of nature which gives comfort similarly as light filters through trees and leaves. During summers, the screen shuts out sun-rays as the green envelops the screen by taking up moisture through gels, which helps the grass to grow, whereas during the winter season the same screen lets sunlight smother your room as the green expires, leaving your space warm and cosy. Air conditioning though is a necessity during summers but adds a lot of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

The four-story home – clad with beautiful, sustainable Western Red Cedar siding – is set on a steep hillside site that provides for a very vertical design with living and private zones situated on multiple separate floors. 7 Alternatives to Pandora and?Last.FM Whether you are annoyed by the ads on Pandora, the limited number of skips, or the abyss of cruel 30-second song teasers from Last.FM, many online listeners are growing weary of mainstream methods of hearing new music. While the Pandora algorithm is strong, and the Last.FM related artists tool is pretty useful, don’t fool yourself in to thinking that there aren’t other great ways to expose yourself to new music in the depths of cyberspace. Here are 7 alternatives to Pandora and Last.FM that will infuse your day with an uninterrupted stream of music that large record companies haven’t managed to squash under their thumbs yet. StumbleAudio StumbleAudio has a killer recommendation engine that works better for me than Pandora’s. Instead of “genomes”, StumbleAudio uses listeners’ favoritism as well as buying pattern data from online music stores to make suggestions.
