The Experience and Perception of Time What is ‘the perception of time’? The very expression ‘the perception of time’ invites objection. Insofar as time is something different from events, we do not perceive time as such, but changes or events in time. Kinds of temporal experience There are a number of what Ernst Pöppel (1978) calls ‘elementary time experiences’, or fundamental aspects of our experience of time. Duration One of the earliest, and most famous, discussions of the nature and experience of time occurs in the autobiographical Confessions of St Augustine. Augustine's answer to this riddle is that what we are measuring, when we measure the duration of an event or interval of time, is in the memory. Whatever the process in question is, it seems likely that it is intimately connected with what William Friedman (1990) calls ‘time memory’: that is, memory of when some particular event occurred. The specious present The term ‘specious present’ was first introduced by the psychologist E.R. Here is one attempt to do so. Φ-β-κ
Nokia Liquid Phone by Rune Larsen A Phone That’s Not Afraid to Mess with Water Among the grievous wrongs done by touchscreen technology, the worst is its disregard for tactile feedback. Without the pleasant sensation of a button being pressed, we are woefully incapable of using any gadget without complete visual attention. This Nokia concept tries to right this wrong by using a small pump to fill a substrate beneath the screen that gives our fingers something to feel and press. Maybe now I can finally type out these posts while driving to work without having to put my coffee in the cup holder. Designer: Rune Larsen Minimalist Multi-Touch Glass Keyboard And Mouse Here’s a cool project from kickstarter.com by Jason Giddings, a multi-touch glass keyboard and mouse. No this keyboard is not made by Apple but it does use the same less is more mentality. The multi-touch glass keyboard and mouse are currently in the concept phase and pledges are being taken to make them a reality. The mouse and keyboard looks very elegant and modern and are sure to be a conversation piece at the office. They have been designed to make use of existing proven technology and don’t contain any moving parts. The devices are wireless and will come with rechargeable Lithium Polymer batteries, Bluetooth support, and sound and light which can be disabled. The multi-touch keyboard contains all the keys you’d find in a traditional keyboard but they’re drawn on the back side of the glass, so they won’t rub off over time. The multi-touch glass keyboard is not only cool looking but it also has a few advantages over a conventional keyboard. Posted on December 1, 2011
An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything "An Exceptionally Simple Theory of Everything"[1] is a physics preprint proposing a basis for a unified field theory, very often referred to as "E8 Theory,"[2] which attempts to describe all known fundamental interactions in physics and to stand as a possible theory of everything. The paper was posted to the physics arXiv by Antony Garrett Lisi on November 6, 2007, and was not submitted to a peer-reviewed scientific journal.[3] The title is a pun on the algebra used, the Lie algebra of the largest "simple", "exceptional" Lie group, E8. The theory received accolades from a few physicists[citation needed] amid a flurry of media coverage, but also met with widespread skepticism.[4] Scientific American reported in March 2008 that the theory was being "largely but not entirely ignored" by the mainstream physics community, with a few physicists picking up the work to develop it further.[5] Overview[edit] Non-technical overview[edit] Levels of magnification: 1. OpenLeaks may very well be the WikiLeaks alternative in 2011, not as a destination, but as an enabler for media organizations to do the same as WikiLeaks. -Vadim Lavrusik, Community Manager 3. As social marketing starts to surpass traditional marketing methods, companies will look for influential individuals who can rep their product well. 4. 5. 6.
Core77 / industrial design magazine + resource / home Lightsabres: Lasers Compared To Star Wars Weapon Sold On Web To The UK By Damien Pearse, Sky News Online A handheld laser likened to a Star Wars lightsabre and so powerful it can instantly blind and "set fire to skin and other body parts" can be bought online and shipped to the UK. The device - with a beam 1,000 times stronger than sunlight on the skin - is touted by makers as "the most dangerous laser ever created". Trading standards chiefs said they were "seriously concerned" about the sale of the model and have warned against its use. As well as blinding, burning and causing cancer, its Hong Kong-based maker admits that "a split-second laser light in a plane cockpit (...) can be disastrous". Star Wars fans are among hundreds of people who have already shown an interest in buying the laser, for sale to the general public for £135. Laser safety expert John Colton, director of Lucid Optical Services, told Sky News Online that the lasers were "horrendously dangerous". "Under no circumstances should they be on sale on the internet," he said.
