Journalism Warning Labels Posted by Marc van Gurp | 15-08-2010 21:24 | Category: Activism, Media Isn’t it strange that the media carefully label any content that involves sex, violence or strong language but there’s no labelling system for wacky journalism and other questionable content? (like this blogpost :-) Geek comedian Tom Scott designed a solution for this. He made a sticker template which is downloadable at his website.
Web Design Trends for 2010 With a new year on the horizon, it’s time to pack away the old, worn web designs and prepare for the brave, new face of tomorrow. Although trends don’t start and stop on January 1st, there is a definite shift from what we craved at the beginning of the year to what we are seeking tutorials for at the end of the year. Most of the time, this shift is subtle. It’s a perfection or re-interpretation of a currently hot trend. Trends help us evolve as designers. Mod Miniatures & Videos for Chillout Sessions XI & XII ShareThis above: An homage to Frank Lloyd Wright & Neutra in miniature graced the Chillout Sessions XII CD and a California style hotel with a lagoon graced the cover of the Chillout Sessions XI CD Designer Andrew van der Westhuyzen of Collider has created album/CD covers and designs for Australia's Ministry of Sound for years. For music compilations, Chillout Sessions XI and XII, he combined several of my favorite things - music, architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra, Swimming pools, and miniatures. The results are little worlds of escapism that when photographed and filmed up close have a tilt-shift look.
Troll Science/Troll Physics About Troll Science, also known as “Troll Physics”, is a rage comic series illustrating various experiments that are based on faulty understanding of scientific concepts. The intentionally pseudo-scientific drawings are often used to mislead the viewers or frustrate science educators and students for their obvious errors. Origin While troll science is rumored to have started on 4chan, the earliest known example was submitted to the f7u12rage comic subreddit in a post titled “Troll Physics” on September 13th, 2010. The comic featured a drawing of a self-propelled truck powered by two horseshoe magnets facing each other, which would be theoretically impossible based on their placement.
LoudSauce: Crowdfunded Advertising for Causes that Matter by Maria Popova What bus shelters have to do with civic engagement and Marshall McLuhan. The key folly of cause marketing can be reduced to low awareness and an unconvincing voice — weak, creatively uncompelling messaging that fails to reach a sufficient number of people and fails to engage those it does reach. Or, to frame it in Marshall McLuhan‘s famous medium/message paradigm, an insufficient medium carrying a toothless message. We’ve previously looked at how UK nonprofit DoTheGreenThing is solving the creative merit problem by borrowing talent from the traditional ad industry to reshape the message. Now, startup LoudSauce is borrowing, quite literally, media space from the traditional media industry to reshape the medium.

A Mix of Reality and Illusion The Noteboek is one of my favorite work from Evelein Lohbeck. She is a freelance artist from Netherland and her work is truly remarkable. As she says she likes to confuse reality and challenge the expectation of people. Viewing her portfolio, she has a done some T shirt designs, flyers, commercial and my favorite her collection of animation and films. I love the way she has put so much emphasis on detail. Condom Campaign Highlights Dizzying Costs of Having a Kid If Don Draper were walking among us, we're betting he'd count this as a pretty clever sell: Sir Richard's, a new condom startup, is advertising its wares not by promises of hair-pulling, nail-scratching pleasure, but rather economics. Simply put, it costs so much to have a damn kid that you better not have one by accident. The new brand is the brainchild of TDA, an ad agency based in Boulder, with backing from Kreloff Equity Partners. The goals for Sir Richard's are several: One is simply aesthetic, as the guys at TDA figured that condom packaging had settled into cliches that rendered the product nearly invisible. Another is social: For every condom bought, one condom will be donated to a country in need.
