NetLab is an interdisciplinary scholarly network studying the intersection of social networks, communication networks, and computer networks. Centered at the University of Toronto, NetLab members have come from across Canada and the United States as well as from Chile, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Japan, Norway, Portugal, and the United Kingdom. NetLab has developed since 2000 from an informal network of collaborators into a far-flung virtual laboratory. Its research focuses on the interplay between social and technological links, including the understanding of social capital in job searches and business settings, new media and community, Internet and personal relations, social media, households, networked organizations, and knowledge transfer in research networks. CONNECTIVISM, A LEARNING THEORY OR A NECESSARY SKILL FOR MODERN LEARNING? #CCK12 Connectivism has been proposed as an alternative learning theory particularly in the age of modern digital technology. As discussed by Robertson in a video lecture (2007), it is true that most of the prior learning theories such as constructivism and cognitism were proposed before our major leaps into the internet revolution happened, and therefore, the possibility of needing a new theory to explain how we learn may be timely. But is CONNECTIVISM, as described by its two main proponents, Siemens and Downes, it?

An Interactive Introduction to Network Analysis and Representation Networks and network analysis has grown more prominent in both humanities scholarship and public discourse. In this context, networks--also known as graphs or node-link diagrams--are "a set of vertices (also called points or nodes) which represent the entities of research interest, and a set of lines (or ties) between these vertices which represent their relationships." [1] This interactive application is designed to provide an overview of various network analysis principles used for analysis and representation. It also provides a few examples of untraditional networks used in digital humanities scholarship.

Livemocha as an online language-learning community (01/2009) - CALICO GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Livemocha system supports an interactive online community where the power of social networking drives the learning community (see Figure 1). Members of the online community benefit from free language lessons, membership in a diverse community, online chat, and access to motivational tools to keep the language learners on track in learning one or more languages. The Livemocha system is an e-learning Web 2.0 startup founded by a group of experienced and successful entrepreneurs based in the Seattle area and launched at the end of September 2007. This community is a first of its kind web-based language-learning solution integrating online instructional content with a global community of language learners. The software is available with support in 11 popular languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Icelandic, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), and Russian.

West Africa: Ghana to Get Biggest Mall in West Africa By 2014 The people of Ghana have for some time now found it very convenient and safe to do their buying at one-stop destination shopping centers, which has resulted in the few available malls being congested, especially, on holidays. In view of this, Ghanaians will soon have the first bigger and more spacious mall, not only in Ghana, but along the entire west coast of Africa, which is under construction. It would be called the West Hills Mall. The mall, which is being constructed with world class infrastructure, is aimed at delivering a uniquely rewarding experience in modern retail shopping. The West Hills Mall, which covers a land size of almost 10 hectares, and a total development area of about 32,000 square metres, is a joint venture development between Delico Property Developments Limited (60%), the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) (40%), and is located on the Kasoa-Cape Coast highway on the Western side of Accra.

munications & Society: The Least to Say about Connectivism, #cck12 I said earlier that a definition is about the least that we can say about anything—teacups, for instance. This does not mean that we shouldn't say the least that we can say. What it means is that this is the barest of starting points. This is the point at which we begin picking ourselves up by our bootstraps to create meaning out of almost nothing. Reading ‘Education and mind in the Knowledge Age’ Carl Bereiter #cck11 Understanding is a relation between the knower and an object of understanding. Understanding implies abilities and dispositions with respect to an object of knowledge sufficient to support intelligent behavior. In all these practical cases, deep understanding means understanding deep things about the object in question, which in turn implies deep and extensive involvement with the object. To behave withunderstanding is to act in ways that are attuned to relevant properties of the thing. The eleven observations made earlier about understanding people are here applied to what we shall for simplicity call ‘Connectivism.’ 1. What constitutes understanding Connectivism depends on your relationship to it.

Accra’s biggest Shopping Mall ready by 2014 Atterbury plans yet another 'biggest shopping mall' worth R900 million (US$96 million) West Hills Mall is on the Cape Coast motorway in west Accra. Connectivist DNA: Epistemology #cck12 I started this post weeks ago, but life happened. I want to continue talking about defining Connectivism. So if we are to avoid a definition of Connectivism that disjoins the theory from similar theories and from the rest of the world and reduces the theory to a handful of essential characteristics how should we proceed? Morin says that we proceed by "distinction, conjunction, and implication" (51).

Busuu got smarter with the MyBusuu Study Guide Busuu launched a new interesting feature for their premium subscribers last week, called the MyBusuu Study Guide. This feature is developed in partnership with the Salzburg Research Institute and lets students set their personal study goals and track the progress over time. Also, the tests at the end of each section got a refresh and will now adapt the questions to the mistakes the learner had made during the sections. I think, this is again a very clever move of the Busuu team. One of the biggest drawbacks in learning online, self paced or with a teacher, up to now is on the one hand the lack of standards and measuring the progress and on the other hand the needed adjustments of the curriculum to the individual learner’s progress.

Ghana Real Estate Market promises to Flourish in 2013 An artist's impression of Devtraco Plus' Palmers Place development in Accra, one of their flagship developments in Ghana, which has seven five bedroom luxury townhouses in phase one. The rise of Ghana property market has been well documented in the past decade and there has been an improvement in infrastructure deficit with better prospects for growth still to come. Millions of dollars are being realised by private entrepreneurs, especially in the real estate sector and the ever changing skyline of Accra illustrates this well. The private sector is possibly one of the main engines of growth in Ghana's economy, says Kenneth Ofori, business manager for Devtraco Plus, a luxury real estate company in Ghana. The stable democratic atmosphere and the discovery of oil reserves in 2010 have made Ghana the fastest growing economy in the West African Sub region. Currently, reports indicate that 80,000 barrels a day are being supplied.
