Daté « Pentecôte 2007 », l’ouvrage de Jean Clair est comme une réponse à chaud à l’accord signé le 6 mars précédent entre la France et les Emirats Arabes Unis et actant la construction d’un musée universel. Il vient après la parution en décembre 2006, par ses soins, ceux de Françoise Cachin et Roland Recht, d’une tribune dans Le Monde intitulée « Les musées ne sont pas à vendre », point de départ d’une pétition protestant contre ce projet de musée.
