Billions meant for struggling homeowners may pay down deficit instead By Pro PublicaThursday, August 25, 2011 20:52 EDT With housing prices dropping sharply, and foreclosure filings against more than 1 million properties in the first half of this year, the Obama administration is scrambling for ways to help homeowners. One place they won’t be looking: an estimated $30 billion from the bailout that was slated to help homeowners but is likely to remain unspent. Instead, Congress has mandated that the leftover money be used to pay down the debt. Of the $45.6 billion in Trouble Asset Relief Program funds meant to aid homeowners, the most recent numbers available show that only about $2 billion has actually gone out the door. The low number reflects how little the government’s home loan modification and other programs have actually helped homeowners deal with the foreclosure crisis. The programs have been marked by poor oversight and consistent under-enrollment. The other ideas the administration is looking at have received mixed reviews. Pro Publica

#wlfind Give Us a Year to Remember, CrowdSourcerers Over the past week, WikiLeaks has released 133,887 US diplomatic cables from around the world - more than half of the entire Cablegate material (251,287 cables). The new release was met with a sustained Denial of Service (DOS) attack during the first 36 hours. WikiLeaks had to rely on back-up servers for some hours. With supporters’ help, WikiLeaks was able to bring in additional servers to stave off the attack. For the first time, the diplomatic cables are available from every country that has US diplomatic representation. Nine months ago today, WikiLeaks launched Cablegate together with four media partners (Der Spiegel, El Pais, Le Monde, the Guardian) and the New York Times (who obtained the cables from the Guardian). Henk van Ess (@henkvaness) Hero Bradley Manning WikiLeaks cables: You ask, we search | World news @AuMoulinVert asked for Olympics 2012 French presidential hopeful, Ségolène Royal, told US diplomats French arrogance was partly to blame for Paris's lost bid to host the 2012 Olympic games. The games were awarded to London after a closely contested vote that saw both Tony Blair then French president Jacques Chirac fly to Singapore in July 2005 to make their case to delegates. A confidential cable dated 17 February 2006 from the US ambassador to Paris concerning a recent meeting with Royal said she had suggested, he wrote, a need "to find France's place in the world" with the French government showing less arrogance in how it speaks to the world. The latter factor, she suggested, had played a role in the defeat of France's 2012 Olympics candidacy, he wrote. Reports at the time said Chirac had said of the British bid: "We can't trust people who have such bad food. @Abracarioca asked for anything on Roman Polanski from the Bern or Paris embassies @WallyHoest asked for Geert Wilders

Cyber defence centres in Italy and Germany attacked, as US-CERT director resigns following attacks July 26, 2011 The Italian cyber crime agency has been hacked, with 8GB of data released online. With media speculation that the incident against the Centro Nazionale Anticrimine Informatico per la Protezione delle Infrastrutture Critiche (CNAIPIC) was in retaliation for arrests of Italian members of Anonymous, a statement from the hackers did not bear the typical trademarks of the group. The hacktivism group did post a link to a statement, which said that it was a ‘pre-release of a series' that was going to reveal European cyber operation evidence exploitation and abuse' and would be ‘the biggest in history'. It said that information was going to be published and tweeted ‘all over Anonymous and the LulzSec community'. Among the estimated 8GB of data that was leaked, it said that it was information relating to government departments in Egypt, Australia, Russia, Ukraine, Nepal, Belarus, Gibraltar, Cyprus, the Cayman Islands and Vietnam.
