Brooding Cityscapes Painted with Oils by Jeremy Mann San Francisco-based artist Jeremy Mann executes these sublime, moody cityscapes using oil paints. To create each work he relies on a wide range of techniques including surface staining, the use of solvents to wipe away paint, and the application of broad, gritty marks with an ink brayer. The resulting paintings are dark and atmospheric, urban streets seemingly drenched in rain and mystery.
Weekend Cabin: Lake Joseph Boathouse, New York The quarries around Lake Joseph, New York, provided the stone for sidewalks in the early days of New York City. That business faded with the invention of concrete, but there still remains a connection between the city and the area today, with a passel of second homes, like this boathouse. What is that they say about location again? Weekend Cabin isn’t necessarily about the weekend, or cabins.
Personality, budget-friendly luxury on Lonely Planet’s first top hotels list | Compass Mihir Gahr topped Lonely Planet's inaugural top hotels list. (Photo: James Kay / Lonely Planet) With its diverse first-ever list of the world’s top places to stay, Lonely Planet has a message for travelers: You don’t need to pay a lot to enjoy a memorable experience. The winners are as varied as they are over the top. Of course, special doesn’t always come cheap; a suite at Mihir Garh costs about $400 US a night (including meals), while others go for $350 to $600 or even higher. The Backpack in Cape Town, South Africa, was No. 1 among best value options. Tom Hall, editor of Lonelyplanet.com, said value for money was as important as any other factor in evaluating the properties. For those seeking even cheaper options, Lonely Planet also came up with a list of 10 budget properties, all of which cost less than $100 a night. “If anybody hasn’t stayed in a hostel for 15 or 20 years, I’d recommend they give it another try,” said Hall, who sometimes stays in hostels with his own family.

All you can feel is the freezing cold water beneath your feet; all you see is dark blue water extending to infinity. Imagine for one second descending into the blue, deeper and deeper with every kick and breath. The adrenaline kicks in and as the pressure builds, water compresses your chest. You’re scared, but there is something strangely inviting about the descent that makes it feel like you’re travelling to the center of the Earth. Effectively limestone sinkholes, or submarine caves, blue holes are given their name because of the contrasting deep blue of the hole and the lighter blue of the shallows around them. 1. Just off the coast of Korcula, one of Croatia’s biggest islands you’ll find Modra Spilja (the Blue Cave). 2. Not clearly as visible from the surface, the mouth to Malta’s Blue Hole starts at 7 m deep, and is the most popular dive site on the islands. 3. 4. 5.

20 Awesome U.S. Cities You Need To Visit In Your 20s When you think of American tourism, certain locations come to mind: the bright lights of New York City, the palm trees of Southern California, the nostalgia of Disney World. But for the cash-strapped, adventure-seeking, microbrewed-beer loving, locavore millennial, the old favorites of U.S. tourism don't hold much appeal. Instead, these twenty cities make perfect locations for an urban vacation or worthy spots along a road trip. Nashville, Tennessee The capital of Tennessee pretty much has it all -- gorgeous green space (the Metro Board of Parks and Recreation manages 10,200 acres of land, including 99 parks), urban culture, collegians, and great food. Asheville, North Carolina A quirky haven in the midst of traditional (yet very beautiful) Southern towns, Asheville is a hippie capital of the south. Portland, Oregon Kind of obvious, but necessary for this list, Portland, Oregon, has long been a hot spot for the young, the artsy and those looking for a good time. Denver, Colorado Austin, Texas
Eye-Popping If you're in need of an emotional boost, take a virtual trip to the chipper town of Burano, Italy on this fine Travel Tuesday. The wee island is located in the same lagoon as Venice, but its colors pop and fizzle in a way that makes it feel almost tropical. The houses on Burano obviously follow a special color pattern, dating to the island's "golden age" when it was first becoming developed. If you live on Burano and wish to paint your house, you must send a letter to the government, and they'll reply telling you which colors you're allowed to paint your lot. Legend says that the island's fisherman were the first to paint their houses in bright colors, so they could see them while they were out fishing. Lacemaking is another one of little Burano's big highlights. Nowadays, lace stores and ice cream shops and artisan kiosks clutter Burano's narrow streets. Finding the universe: Top tips for surviving a European city in summer Europe. It’s jam packed with incredible places to visit, and the cities are no exception to this rule. From the gondola clad waterways of Venice, to the Gaudi wackiness in Barcelona, to the romance that is Paris – there is truly something for everyone. The problem with this mass appeal is that the masses are appealed. Well, if you are absolutely set upon visiting a European city in summer, maybe to get the best of the weather, or because that’s the only time you can get away, fear not! Tip 1 - Stay healthy & safe Something a lot of folks neglect to do when travelling is keeping an eye on their personal health and safety. Apply sunscreen! Tip 2 – Plan your accommodation & transport properly Summer time is peak time, which means the prices for everything are liable to go up. Rent an apartment. Tip 3 – Get off the beaten path and avoid peak times If you’re anything like me, you’ll find that large crowds of people can detract from your overall travel experience. Enough about me though.
